Wolves opinion: Should Nuno Santo make a move for Morgan Sanson?

Wolverhampton Wanderers have had an exceptional season so far and they need to continue that form in the near future. They outdid every side in the Championship last season and on their return to the Premier League, they have outdone nearly every side in the top-tier.

Under manager Nuno Espirito Santo they’ve found a way to beat the top-six. So far, they have gotten results against Manchester City, Arsenal on two separate occasions, Manchester United on three separate occasions, Tottenham and Chelsea.

Liverpool, Manchester City and Tottenham are the only sides to beat them at least once, with the Reds yet to play them again. It shows just how well they’ve adjusted.

Unlike their fellow contemporaries from the Championship, who’ve been relegated after just one season in the Premier League. Wolverhampton Wanderers are set to play European football next season.

At the moment, they sit in seventh place with four points separating them and Everton. And with just one game left, Wolves are mathematically secure. This does mean more money, more chances at glory but it also means more games and thus more pressure on the club.

Given the players they have at their disposal, it’s a battle that the club might not win and that’s exactly why they’ve been linked with a move for Morgan Sanson. The Mirror has reported that the club are keen on a move for the Marseille midfielder.

Wolves have been previously linked with a move for the 24-year-old Frenchman, with the Guardian reporting as such. That should come to no surprise, as the club has just five midfielders at their disposal.

This includes first-teamers Ruben Neves, Joao Moutinho and Leander Dendoncker, with Roman Saiss and Morgan Gibbs-White providing back-up.

But Dendoncker’s versatility and defensive nuance mean that he is often used as a centre-back in Nuno Espirito Santo’s 3-5-2 formation leaving them without cover. Sanson is the perfect addition there, as the 24-year-old is a mobile, energetic and very creative player.

This season he has a passing accuracy of 83% 2.2 tackles and 1.4 interceptions, which makes him a very useful player to have in the middle of the park. An all-round midfielder, as the statistics show, Sanson would add a lot to the club and is a lot like Joao Moutinho in many ways.

It’s why the move makes sense, especially with the former Monaco man ageing.
