7 goals, 3 assists – Wolves signing this Serie A ace for £26m would have eased their central midfield woes

Why Wolves should have signed Kessie in the summer

According to a report in the Birmingham mail in the summer, Wolverhampton Wanderers had been linked with a move for AC Milan’s Franck Kessie. Wolves had bid £26m, which isn’t too high considering the inflated market today but the move never materialized.

Joao Moutinho and Ruben Neves were played in nearly every game alongside one another and it’ll be difficult for Moutinho to continue performing at such a high level, given his age.

It’s important that Wolves look to add some depth alongside the Portuguese international or at the very least, they should get someone to replace them in certain games.

Last season, they had a fairly tightly knit squad which rotated the least amongst all the Premier League sides. However, that will simply not do this season if they are to make any progress, especially with far more games coming their way due to the Europa League commitments.

Wolves have been very smart in the transfer market in the last two seasons and Kessie would be another very smart signing if they go through with the deal. He’s tenacious, great in transition and is a decent dribbler, who will allow for some ball progression.

Kessie made a slightly slow start to his career at Milan but has gone onto become their best central midfield player under Gennaro Gattuso. Last season, he scored 7 goals and 3 assists and had one of his better campaigns.

Wolves have been quite busy with their European qualifiers and have had some tricky fixtures so far and if they want to make progress on their 7th place finish from last season, they need to bulk up their squad. They’ve had 3 draws so far, which isn’t too bad considering where their competition is.

They face Torino in their final qualifier and follow that with an away game against Everton in a game that could dictate the way the rest of their season goes.

A win would suggest that they’re clear from the best of the rest, a draw would suggest that they’ve not progressed and a loss would suggest that they’ve not improved. Kessie would’ve helped make that step up.
