Wolves season preview 2019/20: Can Nuno’s men make inroads into the Premier League elite?

Wolves opinion: Wolves Season Preview

Wolverhampton Wanderers will be facing Crusaders FC in their second qualifying round of the Europa League on Friday, which will set the tone for most of their season. If they qualify for the Europa League, it will have a massive effect on how their season goes.

Last season, they had a fairly tightly knit squad that rotated the least among all the Premier League sides. However, that will simply not do this season if they want to make greater progress. They’re likely to play far more games and will have to improve on what they already have.

Transfer window analysis

So far, they’ve signed Jesus Vallejo of Real Madrid on loan, who’s a fantastic talent. He has admirable leadership qualities and is a great defender in the channels.

They’ve also wrapped up a deal for Patrick Cutrone from AC Milan (h/t BBC) to add to their attacking options after getting rid of Ivan Cavaleiro and sending Douglas Costa on loan to Leeds United.

These will be fine additions but they should also think about adding some depth in the midfield with Joao Moutinho not getting any younger after a fantastic season last time out.

The opening fixture

With the increasing number of fixtures and some very tough fixtures to start the season with, Wolves will need all the help that they can get.

First, they face a reinvigorated Leicester City squad followed by a tough home game against Manchester United.

However, that’s not necessarily a bad thing as Wolves have a fantastic record against the top sides with their fantastic ability to build counter attacks.

They do this with their centre-backs and midfielders, who have a fantastic range of long passing after absorbing pressure from the opposition for long periods.

However, this has often meant that they struggle to break down teams who sit back and Wolves need to look at a player or two who can play an eye of the needle pass and create in tight spaces.

While their tactic will serve them well against Europa League opposition, expectations will be a lot higher this season and teams will come better prepared to nullify their threats next season after having experienced them first-hand last season.

Prediction

A big reason for their 7th place finish was the fact that they got so many points off the big-six. While there’s no guarantee that they’ll be able to accomplish that again, they can look forward to another decent season.

However, if we are to make a prediction, we’re going to go with 8th, as West Ham have made some massive improvements to their squad in the transfer window.
