Wolves Season Preview 2018/19 – Manager’s system, Key player and Predicted finish

Talking about making progress in the transfer window, Wolves come into our minds straight away. They have bought some fantastic players to improve their squad to challenge for a top-half finish in the Premier League. Manager Nuno Espirito Santo has been impressive for the club and will be looking forward to work at the top-level once again.

Wolves have got themselves a balanced squad capable of fulfilling the demands of the Premier League. The defence looks great with the likes of Ryan Bennett, Conor Coady and Ruben Vinagre. A midfield of Ruben Neves and Joao Moutinho will have creativity and high amount of work-rate to cover the ground. They have got some good players in the attacking department too, making them a complete team.

Manager’s system – Secure all over the pitch

Nuno prefers to play the 3-4-3 formation with three physical centre-backs and two wing-backs. The midfielders need to have the discipline to track the runners and also help the front-line upon requirement. It is a safe formation in a way that the wing-backs don’t always move forward, rather they take turns to make forays up the pitch and help out the attack.

The manager drills his midfielders to have great positional awareness with and without the ball throughout the game. The front-three are close to each other and interchangeable according to the situation of the game.

Wolves are not a side that rely on long balls and set-pieces. They are more of a team who build an attack from the back and progress step by step. They are quite an attractive proposition to look at.

Joao Moutinho

Key player – Joao Moutinho

Getting Moutinho is a fantastic business by the club as the Portuguese midfielder has the experience and know-how of how a midfield works in top-level game. He will ably support the creative Ruben Neves and contribute to the team by sitting in front of the centre-backs to start attacks and shield the back line during counter-attacks.

Predicted finish – 8th

Wolves have done enough to harness themselves a top-half finish. But football is not played on paper, and so they need to perform well on the pitch to deserve a finish close to the top-6 clubs. Nuno would know that the foundation has been built and that he just needs to make his team play according to his plans to reap rewards.
