Wolves must go all out to sign this versatile 27-year-old Swiss star once the window reopens in January

Why Wolves should go all out to sign Moritz Bauer in January

It’s been a hectic start to the season for Wolves. After finishing seventh in the Premier League last term, Wolves are in this season’s Europa League qualifiers. They defeated Armenian club FC Pyunik 8-0 on aggregate to book a place in the Europa League play-off with Serie A side Torino.

On Thursday night, the Wanderers travel to Italy to face Torino in the first leg before they resume Premier League duty on Sunday against Burnley at home.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s side faced Manchester United on Monday evening in the Premier League. They held United to a 1-1 draw at Molineux, which was a fair result from both team’s point of view. In that game, Wolves right wing-back Matt Doherty was forced out with injury at half-time.

Despite being ill, Matt Doherty, 27, started the game but he royally struggled to cope with the pace of Marcus Rashford on the right flank. He was subbed for Adama Traore, who impressed after coming on and made a real impact with his pace and direct running.

Doherty has been a fantastic servant for Wolves over the past nine years or so, but he needs competition and cover at right wing-back position. Traore did well after replacing him against United; however, he isn’t a natural defender and it’ll be foolish to rely upon him when Doherty gets injured.

Back in January, the Sky Sports had claimed that Wolves were in talks with Stoke City over a possible deal for full-back Moritz Bauer. But a move never happened then and he stayed at Stoke.

Moritz Bauer wasn’t involved in Stoke’s pre-season as the club are looking to offload him. If the Swiss full-back doesn’t find a suitor from Europe, Wolves must reignite their interest and look to sign him during the January transfer window.

The 27-year-old is a rampaging right-back but he is equally adept playing at left-back or on either of the wings.

Renowned for his pace, energy and ability on the ball, he backs his ability to beat his marker and deliver devilish crosses into the box for his teammates to feast upon. The Swiss remains calm on and off the ball and Nuno’s counter-attacking style of play will make him a perfect fit at Wolves.

Bauer will add competition and cover for Doherty, and that could see both give their very best to cement a place at right wing-back in Nuno’s starting XI.

Verdict

Bauer and his versatility will play a huge part in the years to come for Wolves, which is why Nuno should go all out to land him in January 2020.
