Why Wolves should make a move for Dani Olmo in January

According to a report from the Sun, Wolves were one of the host of clubs interested in signing Dinamo Zagreb star Dani Olmo during the summer transfer window. However, Dinamo Zagreb wanted to keep hold of their playmaker and they have managed to do so.

Dani Olmo, 21, shot to fame with three goals in five games as Spain won the Under-21 European Championships in Italy this summer, including a sublime chip in the final victory over Germany.

His stock has never been higher, and he has taken that form back to Croatia. The forward has enjoyed a top start to the new campaign too, bagging four goals and as many assists in six games across all competitions.

Considering the start the Spanish Under-21 international has had in the new campaign, Wolves must reignite their interest and go for Dani Olmo in January.

After an excellent seventh-placed finish on their return to the Premier League last season, Wolves are aiming to break into the top six this term. And slow starts for clubs like Tottenham, Manchester United and Chelsea should encourage the Wanderers to achieve their ambitions.

However, the Midlands outfit themselves have not had an ideal start to the 2019/20, as they remain without a win after four games.

One of the reasons for Wolves’ poor start is down to their lack of creativity in the final third. Joao Moutinho is a creative spark in the team but he’s getting older, while academy kid Morgan Gibbs-White isn’t yet starting games for the club. So where will creativity come from for Nuno Espirito Santo’s side?

Olmo certainly could be that player for Wolves. The Catalan-born youngster regularly finds a way past his marker but his close touch control also draws plenty of fouls from the opposition.

Fast, skilful and able to change a game in an instant, the 21-year-old’s versatility to play anywhere across the frontline would certainly appeal to a shrewd tactician like Nuno.

The one-time La Masia starlet is technically excellent on the ball, possessing the vision to pick a pass in the final third and score goals.

His clever sense of positioning, coupled with his exquisite control over the ball could make him a useful addition to the Wolves setup. Olmo could provide that creative essence in the final third Wolves have been lacking so far this season.

With Raul Jimenez an undoubted starter for Wolves, Olmo could rotate with the likes of Patrick Cutrone and Jota to partner the Mexican as one of Nuno’s ‘inside forwards’.

Verdict

Wolves will have to come up with a substantial offer to tempt Dinamo into selling Olmo in January. And if they can land the Spaniard, his attacking prowess could solve the Wanderers’ offensive woes and potentially bolster their top-six hopes this season.
