Why Rangers should re-sign Steven Davis from Southampton

According to a report in Sky Sports, Premier League club Southampton are willing to let Steven Davis rejoin Rangers if the Scottish club can offer an agreeable contract to the midfielder. The 33-year-old Northern Ireland midfielder left the Ibrox to arrive at the St.Mary’s in 2012 and has been a significant part of the Saints’ rise over the years.

He is now entering the final six months of his contract and it is highly unlikely that Southampton will offer him a contract extension. As per the report, Gers boss Steven Gerrard is interested in bringing the player back to Glasgow.

The report further states that the wages could be a stumbling block in this deal, however, the player is willing to take a pay-cut and Saints are open to selling him on a permanent basis. Here’s why Rangers should bring Davis back in the fold sooner than later:

Davis’ experience could be key

The best thing to do would be to bring Steven Davis by the end of this transfer window. That will help the squad in a massive way.

The midfielder is an experienced professional who has the know-how of dealing with various situations in a game of football. He has played over 200 times for Southampton, featuring 193 times in a league as tough as the Premier League.

The 33-year-old also has over 100 international caps, which indicates the calmness and the experience factor he can bring to the squad. After beating Celtic in the Old Firm Derby, Rangers are only behind their rivals on goal difference.

Hence, we can evidently say that the Ibrox-based outfit will be chasing their first title in a long while after a pretty good start to life under Gerrard.

With Ovie Ejaria leaving the club, there is a midfield spot to fill, especially in a season where a lot of games are still to be played.

Ovie Ejaria

Steven Davis is a versatile midfield player who can operate as a number eight, as a wide player or as a number 10 behind the striker. He can provide a different dimension, which would help the team in many ways.

His accurate passing in tight midfield areas and the propensity to wriggle past opponents to create space for a key pass or shot are pretty impressive. All in all, the 33-year-old would be an ideal addition to the Rangers squad. They mustn’t wait until the summer and get him this month instead.
