Wigan beating Millwall to sign this Scottish league sensation would be a terrific piece of business

Wigan Athletic opinion: The Latics should beat Millwall for Sam Cosgrove

According to Sun’s journalist Alan Nixon, Millwall have entered the race for highly-rated striker Sam Cosgrove. The young Aberdeen striker made the move from Carlisle United in the winter of 2018 and has since been a revelation for the Scottish side.

He initially struggled to do well for the club, but things have changed this season. So far, Cosgrove has made 35 appearances for Aberdeen, scoring 18 goals in all competitions, a tally that includes 14 in the Premiership.

What makes this even more impressive is the fact that barring two goals, every single one of his 14 goals has come after December. This includes a 11game streak where he contributed to 15 goals, with Aberdeen losing just two games in the process.

It shows just how good the 22-year-old has been since moving to Scotland after a disastrous spell in England.

Shipped from Everton to Wigan and then to Carlisle United, Sam Cosgrove has shown just how tenacious and determined he is, refusing to give up even when Wigan Athletic released him for free.

He struggled there but a big reason behind that was down to Cosgrove’s lack of game time, playing just 11 games all season. This included just 314 minutes in League Two, which is why the 22 year old only managed to score one goal.

Despite all that, Cosgrove is proving to become someone that the Latics are regretting letting go. His presence at the moment would be more than welcome for Paul Cook’s side given their various issues up front.

Will Grigg left the club in January for Sunderland and is still among their top five goal scorers. Cook has Joe Garner, Leon Clarke and Devante Cole at his disposal, but they’ve only managed to score 9 goals between themselves.

Cole hasn’t made a single appearance this season and that has made things even worse for the club. Any way you look at it, Sam Cosgrove’s presence would be welcome with open arms.

Conclusion

While Sam Cosgrove is by no means a world-class striker, his ability is desperately needed at Wigan Athletic, especially if the club are to move higher than the 19th place that they’ve managed this season.
