A standout performer for the Canaries this season, the 21-year-old Cantwell has also attracted the likes of Tottenham’s league rivals Manchester United and Manchester City, the report added.
The £30million-rated youngster, who has 6 goals to his name this season, is Norwich’s second-highest goal-scorer in the league only behind striker Teemu Pukki (9 goals). Apart from the goals, Cantwell has also assisted 2 times for the newly-promoted side so far this season.
With the midfielder’s attacking abilities out in the open, it is no big surprise that he has featured in all of Canaries’ 21 league matches so far. Despite his eye-catching displays, Norwich are struggling at the bottom of the table and look well set for relegation to the Championship once again.
Tottenham, meanwhile, will face stiff difficulty in grabbing Cantwell’s signature, as Norwich will be determined to hold on to their key player until the end of the season at least, in order to boost their chances of staying up.
Moreover, the youngster is also tied to the club until 2022, making it even more difficult for Jose Mourinho’s Spurs.
Nevertheless, Tottenham should maximise their efforts to secure the British talent if they wish to climb up the ladder, with the side currently hanging at 6th place in the table.
Tottenham, who had earlier endured a poor start to their league this season, saw a sudden resurgence with the arrival of Mourinho. But they have suffered a recent dip in form, with the side losing 2 of their last 4 league games.
The North London club, at the moment, have just two left-midfielders in Son Heung-min and the young Ryan Sessegnon. However, Son plays a little up front and favours playing in a more attacking role as a wide forward, while Sessegnon has still not completely gained Mourinho’s trust.
He has also been seen in the left-back role, with Danny Rose now out in the cold.
This leaves Mourinho with not so many options on the left flank and Cantwell, who is often featured as a left-midfielder, could be a good addition to the Spurs squad.
Moreover, Cantwell’s versatility could be a great asset, with the Portuguese boss yet to find a proper midfield combination until now. This has seen Mourinho often resort to shuffling his options in the midfield according to requirements of the game.
Also, with Christian Eriksen looking set for a move in the near future, Cantwell, whose consistent on-field attacking displays have been impressive this season, could indeed be a worthy signing.
Having proven his mettle at such a short span, there is no doubt that Cantwell is talented, and it would do be immensely beneficial if Tottenham decide to take him.
Moreover, consistency is something that has eluded the North London side throughout this season, and it would do them the world of good to have someone like Cantwell, who has been a regular performer.
Hence, signing the in-form midfielder would do them no harm but only increase their chances of a Champions League spot.
