Why Wolves signing Matheus Cunha would be a good move

According to Sky Sports, Wolves have joined a host of top European clubs in the hunt for RB Leipzig striker Matheus Cunha.

Matheus Cunha transfer history

A Coritiba FC youth product, Cunha moved to Switzerland with FC Sion in 2017. His first season with Sion saw him score 10 goals and further set up 8 in 29 Super League games, which convinced RB Leipzig to lure him to Germany, the next summer.

He was a regular member of Leipzig’s squad in his initial season at the Red Bull Arena and contributed with 9 goals and one assist across all competitions for Die Roten Bullen.

However, the existence of prominent forward Timo Werner has made it difficult for the Brazilian to start regularly this term, making only 10 league appearances so far.

Meanwhile, Nuno Espirito Santos’ side have displayed some excellent performances in the league – including a double win over Manchester City and Wolves seem to be getting stronger.

They have also made a statement across Europe by qualifying for the intermediate round of the Europa League and the manager must make sure his players are fit. In fact, the midlands club have played more this year than the rest of the Premier League teams.

One area of concern for the manager would be the attacking department, where Raul Jimenez and Diogo Jota had led them successfully so far. But the Mexican has been linked with a move away from the club in January and Nuno has acknowledged the plight of his striker.

This could turn out against their favour and so the Portuguese tactician must strengthen his squad by prioritizing a striker in January. In that case, Matheus Cunha would perfectly fit the bill at the Molineux Stadium.

Cunha has found opportunities hard to come at Leipzig and with the report suggesting he is available up for grabs on a permanent basis this month for £17m, Wolves must attempt to lure him at the earliest.

They could just do with another signing and with Cunha on their side, Wolves will not have to worry about the options upfront.

Matheus Cunha playing style

Predominantly a centre-forward, the 24-year-old is capable of playing equally well on the right side of the attack.

On several occasions, he has also featured as a second striker and this could be of much help to Nuno, whose side have always pushed for the extra goals despite mostly sitting deep on the field.

Former Leipzig manager Ralph Ragnick has described the Brazilian as a player who adds a lot of quality to the attack with his pace, according to Bundesliga. And the 24-year-old is known to be good in front of the goal. And he is exactly the player Nuno would like in his squad.

The video below shows his quality, pace and how dangerous he could be in front of the goal.

Alongside Diogo Jota, Pedro Neto and Adama Traore at Wolves, Cunha can develop into a lethal striker. And under the tutelage of Nuno, who is known to nurture young talents, the youngster can go on to become successful in the Premier League.

Verdict

With Jimenez’s uncertain future at the club, the manager has to rope in a player who can lead them in all competitions and with a player of Cunha’s calibre, the club must not hesitate to sign him this month.
