Wolves signing this talented 18-year-old defender would be an investment towards solidifying their future

Why Wolves should snap up Frederik Winther as a long-term prospect

According to claims from Danish outlet Ekstra Bladet, Wolves are keeping close tabs on Danish starlet Frederik Winther, who currently plies his trade with Lyngby Boldkulb in the Danish Superligaen.

The 18-year-old, who is also being monitored by Reb Bull Leipzig and Red Bull Salzburg, has already made a full transition to senior men’s football this season, accumulating a total of 13 appearances across all competitions for the 10th-placed side in the top-flight. (h/t Ekstra Bladet)

Winther started his career in the youth ranks of Copenhagen before switching boats to join Lyngby in the summer of 2017 and he has caught the eye with his rapid development in his homeland.

After impressing the youth staff at various age-group levels over the course of the last couple of seasons, the talented teenager was promoted to the first-team prior to the start of the ongoing campaign and he has established himself as a regular fixture at the senior level. ‘

Essentially a left-footed centre-back by nature, Winther’s meteoric rise in Denmark hasn’t eluded the eyes of bigger clubs in Europe, and with Wolves, RB Leipzig and RB Salzburg all hot on the youngster’s trail, the 18-year-old might not be honing his skills in his homeland for very long.

Frederik Winther, who has already made his mark for Denmark at U-18 and U-19 levels, is held in high regard at Lyngby as one of the brightest emerging defensive prospects across the nation but the club would be powerless to prevent him from completing a big-money move to one of Europe’s elite leagues.

The teenager is still very much in his formative years as a professional footballer but his talent and potential have been there for everyone to see and it wouldn’t be a surprise if Winther starts to emerge on the radar of some continental heavyweights.

To put things into perspective, Frederik Winther looks like a real talent at this stage of his career and Wolves are well within their rights to look at him as a smart investment for the future.

That the 18-year-old is already rubbing shoulders with the big boys is indicative of a level of maturity that belies his tender years and  Wolves could have a gem on their hands in the years to come if he goes on to fulfil his promise.

Agreed, the Danish prodigy is likely to need time to acclimatise to his new surroundings in England should a move materialize in the near future, but given his obvious talent and vast potential, Wolves have enough reason to hope that he can eventually make the grade moving forward.

Summer loan recruit from Real Madrid, Jesus Vallejo, has struggled to make a big impact, despite the likes of Ryan Bennett and Conor Coady looking shaky on a number of occasions, and the door is certainly open for a youngster to come in and stake a claim for a role in Nuno Santo’s ranks.

In Christian Marques, Dion Sanderson and Raphael Nya, Wolves have some promising up and coming defenders in their U-23s while Chem Campbell is yet another exciting prospect who is currently making waves with his impressive performances for the U-18 side.

To that end, Frederik Winther could be yet another fantastic addition to the plethora of burgeoning young talents at Molineux and this looks like a move that could possibly go on to pay rich dividends in the future.

Standing at 6ft 1 inch, the Dane has the raw physical attributes to excel in the Premier League and some more polishing would certainly go a long way towards helping him unlock his potential.

For the time being, though, Wolves should continue to keep close tabs on his progress in Denmark before making any official approach for the 18-year-old.
