Wolves’ squad would reach the next level if they land this talented French runner in the summer

Wolves opinion: Should Wolves sign Wylan Cyprien?

Nuno Espirito Santo and his men are enjoying a remarkable campaign since their promotion last season. Wolves currently sit 7th on the table, level on points with 8th-placed Watford who are both looking to qualify for the Europa League this season.

If Wolves do make it to the Europa League, Nuno Espirito Santo would have to bolster his squad to progress next season.

One of the main areas he needs to address is central midfield. Joao Moutinho will be 33 in September and Ruben Neves’ future is always in the news, with Manchester United being linked (h/t Daily Star) over the last few months.

With a replacement for Moutinho needed regardless of Neves’ future at the club, Santo should consider Wylan Cyprien as an option.

Cyprien has been a mainstay in the Nice team for a while now and has played 25 games in the Ligue 1 so far. The forward-thinking midfielder, having come through Lens’ youth system, made over 100 appearances for the club in all competitions before moving to Nice in 2016.

The now 24-year old really showcased his talent under then Nice boss Lucian Favre who played him in every position across central midfield.

His adaptation to Favre’s 4-2-3-1 system was impressive where he exchanged roles with midfield partner Jean Michael Seri regularly. If Seri pushed forward, Cyprien held his position in the deep and vice versa.

Cyprien is a tireless runner and can be seen pressing the man for the whole of 90 mins without breaking a sweat. His positioning allows him to close up the space for the opponent and his quick press helps his team recover the ball quickly before any damage is made.

The Frenchman’s close control on the ball is a joy to watch with his drop of the shoulder deceiving his markers regularly. He combines this ability with his burst of pace and leaves defenders stuck on their toes while he charges towards goal.

His passing is another brilliant quality and shows composure on the ball when under pressure, which allows him to move the ball along safely without losing possession.

His eye for space in the attacking third is brilliant and has the ability to pick out a pass if a run is made. Cyprien’s most comparable trait to Ruben Neves is his ability to shoot from distance, either in open play or in set-pieces.

Conclusion

Wylan Cyprien would be a brilliant addition to Nuno Espirito Santo’s side, especially with Joao Moutinho entering the twilight of his career. He would be an incredible signing alongside Ruben Neves.
