Why Wolves should make a move for Moussa Marega in January
Back in May, a report from the Birmingham Mail claimed that Wolves were interested in FC Porto striker Moussa Marega. But they didn’t follow up their interest with a bid and instead went on to sign Patrick Cutrone from AC Milan.
Moussa Marega, 28, impressed last season with his goalscoring ability for FC Porto that caught the eye of a number of clubs across the continent.
The Mali international looked to be on his way out of Portuguese football this summer after spending two-and-a-half years at the Estadio do Dragao, but he has since stayed put at the club.
With three goals and an assist in four league games, the 28-year-old has enjoyed a rollicking start to the new campaign. Given Marega’s consistent goalscoring exploits and European experience with Porto, Wolves would do a smart job by reigniting their interest in the January transfer window.
Wolves weren’t as busy as they were in last summer’s transfer window. Yet, they managed to sign a couple of players to boost their squad depth.
Nuno Espirito Santo knows he has a big challenge on his hands this term of balancing the Premier League and Europa League. That being said, he should’ve added some more players over the summer to cope with different competitions.
The Wanderers need more reinforcements and Nuno must look to add more depth to his forward ranks in January.
In Raul Jimenez, Patrick Cutrone and Diogo Jota, Wolves have limited options upfront to survive more than 60 games this season. Thus, signing Moussa Marega would make sense.
Pacey, strong and powerful, Marega possesses the qualities to thrive in the Premier League. The 28-year-old’s imposing figure helps him in aerial duels, and he will be suited to Wolves’ direct style of play. His scoring prowess is predominantly the reason he rose to prominence in the Liga NOS, though.

The Malian is a quick and dominant player who is a threat on the counter-attack and is also someone who can hold the ball up very well.
He isn’t the most technically gifted forward but makes it up with his work rate and stamina. A handful in the box, Marega will not only add quality to the Wolves’ attacking ranks but also depth to the squad.
Verdict
Although Marega lacks the experience of Premier League, he has proven himself at the Champions League level and has the qualities to make a difference at the Molineux.
He would give Wolves a different sort of presence in attack but the chances are that the Malian would be a rotation player at best.
