Why Wolves should go all out to sign Kenny Tete in January

Back in January, the Birmingham Mail had claimed that Wolves were interested in signing Lyon defender Kenny Tete, but an injury to first-choice right-back Rafael scuppered the deal.

Kenny Tete, 23, was with the famed Ajax academy from the age of 10. He rose through the youth system, before signing his first professional contract in 2012. In the summer of 2017, he signed for Lyon for a fee believed to be around €3m.

The Netherlands international found opportunities hard to come by last season under Bruno Genesio, who preferred Rafael ahead of him at right-back.

That limited Tete to just 13 Ligue 1 appearances in 2018/19; however, things have changed under new manager Sylvinho as Tete has been a regular starter under the Brazilian so far this season.

Nevertheless, Wolves should rekindle their interest in Tete during the January transfer window in a bid to solve their defensive problems.

Wolves registered their first win of the Premier League campaign at the weekend by beating a hapless Watford 2-0. The victory has certainly eased a lot of pressure off Nuno Espirito Santo, whose tactics have failed miserably this time around.

Nuno’s side have looked defensively all over the place, lacking the organisation which made them such a difficult team to break for the opposition.

The Midlands giants need some reinforcements in January if they are to last a full season. The wing-back is an important position in Nuno’s 3-5-2 system, as they are the ones who provide width on the counter and be traditional full-backs while defending.

Wolves have Jonny Otto and Ruben Vinagre down the left, but Matt Doherty is the only right wing-back in the team.

Doherty has suffered injury problems this season that has seen Adama Traore deputise for him at right wing-back. But Traore isn’t a natural wing-back and while he has done a decent job in Doherty’s absence, he cannot be relied upon for the entire season.

That’s when the signing of Kenny Tete would make sense for Wolves. Tete is a very good attacking full-back with good speed and decent crossing ability.

Just like Doherty, the 23-year-old is a creative full-back, who can be relied on to create chances for the attacking players. What’s more, he is able to fill in at centre-back if required, which is sure to appeal to Nuno.

The Netherlands international would provide excellent cover and competition to Doherty, whilst boosting the Wanderers’ defensive options. All in all, Tete would definitely suit Nuno’s wing-back system.

Verdict

Thus, Nuno should go all out in his pursuit of the Ligue 1 star in January.
