Wolves beating Watford would be a crucial step towards their lofty Premier League ambition in the future and here’s why

Wolverhampton Wanderers Opinion: Why Wolves should beat Watford to Josip Vukovic

The Bristol Live (h/t Talksport) has revealed that Wolves and Watford will fight for Maritimo star Josip Vukovic. The 27-year-old has seen his value shoot up in recent months, thanks in part to his impressive performances for Portuguese side Maritimo. Though the Croatian international only joined the club last summer, a move is more than possible.

For Wolves, it’s one that needs to be made given the lack of depth the Premier League side has at the moment. While Ruben Neves, Joao Moutinho and Leander Dendoncker are Nuno Espirito Santo’s first choices, beyond that, the club only has Romain Saiss and Morgan Gibbs-White.

Gibbs-White is only 19 years old, which does not bode well for a club chasing a Europa League spot. At the moment, Wolves sit 7th in the Premier League. They are level on points with Watford but their superior goal difference has placed them above the Hornets.

However, given their performances at the moment, in all likelihood, the club could finish in a top seven place and outdo Watford. This means that next season, Europa League football could be played and that will affect their performances.

Burnley had to go through the same thing and the Clarets are currently 15th in the league. The same could happen to Wolves and a lack of squad depth won’t help the club. Adding someone like Vokovic will help them not only survive next season but it will allow Nuno Espirito Santo to rest key stars.

The 27-year-old is a midfielder by trade, who prefers to play as a defensive midfielder. An enforcer for Maritimo, the Croatian international’s work rate and defensive acumen has stood out in Portugal in his debut season. That combined with his tendency to move the ball forward immediately after winning it back, makes him perfect for Wolves.

But Bristol Live (h/t Talksport) have reported that the likes of Watford, Chelsea and even Leicester City are in the race for the 27-year-old. This could complicate things for the Molineux side, so any move needs to be made before the summer window opens.

Otherwise they could end up losing out on a good midfielder, who’s more than willing to play as a rotating star for the club.
