Why Wolves allowing this 20-year-old to join Portsmouth would benefit all parties involved

Why Wolves should allow Connor Ronan to leave the club and join Portsmouth

Portsmouth manager Kenny Jackett is keen on holding on to Wolverhampton Wanderers loanee Connor Ronan, as per a report from Portsmouth News. Ronan chose to join Portsmouth in January as a part of a six-month loan deal and since then, the 20-year-old has been putting in some impressive displays for the club. He has appeared 10 times for Pompey and it comes as no surprise that Jackett wants to hold on to him for next season as well.

It remains to be seen if they sign him permanently or lure him on a temporary deal once more but based on the way he has been playing for the club, it could end up being a good move for all parties involved. Ronan impressed one and all during his debut performance and he has already received more playing time with Portsmouth than he did with Wolves earlier in the season.

The former Rochdale sensation arrived at the Molineux back in 2014 but since then, he has made just 13 appearances for the Championship leaders. At a time when teenagers like Ryan Sessegnon are making a mark for themselves on a daily basis, it is imperative for Ronan to ensure that he is at a place where he can play regularly. That is an opportunity which might slip out of his hands if he were to move back to Wolverhampton.

With an impending promotion to the top-flight ahead of Nuno Espirito Santo’s men, it seems rather unlikely for the club to allow as much playing time for Ronan, even if he does return after a successful spell with Portsmouth.

At best, he would get to make sporadic appearances and that could prove to be detrimental to his career in the long run. The Wolves might probably splash the cash in the upcoming summer window and that would limit Ronan’s chances to a greater extent.

Much like other players of his age, his best position has been a debate at Wolves and the same appears to be continuing at Portsmouth as well. He is an out-and-out attacker but whether he is a natural central striker or a wide attacker continues to be the source of numerous debates at Fratton Park. However, that does not undermine the player’s talent and potential.

Blessed with ample technical knowledge, Ronan thrives while attacking with his right foot. He has excellent vision as well and boasts of solid passing skills. Equally adept at crossing and set-piece situations, Ronan can prove to be a brilliant asset – but only if he is utilised in a way that can enhance his natural skills.

Hence, to grow and develop as a player, it might be best for him to continue with Portsmouth. As far as Wolves are concerned, one look at their team is enough to deduce that do not need Ronan – at least not right now. Regardless of whether he leaves again on a loan or on a permanent basis, this is a move that can benefit all parties involved.
