Why Willy Boly is a must in Wolves’ squad

According to Daily Mail, Wolves are keen to agree on a new contract with central defender Willy Boly, who has less than two years remaining on his current deal.

Boly is one of the key players in Nuno Espirito Santo’s squad and his contractual position seems to have caught the attention of many European clubs, both in England and in Europe’s top leagues.

Boly will run out of contract on June 30, 2021 which means other clubs may try to lure him away from Molineux Stadium on a free transfer.

Willy Boly

Boly was Wolves’ leader in the heart of the defence, featuring in 36 games in their first season after a return to the Premier League. Wolves won 14 of those games, keeping seven clean sheets. He also scored four goals during that period, showing his presence in the attack – mostly in set-piece scenarios.

He has made eight appearances this season, with two wins and one loss. He has helped Wolves keep three clean sheets and has conceded just seven times in those games.

He made 24 tackles with 50% success rate. His 15 interceptions, 52 clearances and 32 headed clearances in 720 league minutes do not reflect his quality in the backline. Overall, the 28-year-old has played 95 matches and scored 8 goals in three seasons for Wolves.

After joining Wolves on a loan deal, Boly was signed on a permanent basis in July 2018 for £10m. He featured 41 times across all competitions last season, as Wolves managed to secure 7th place in the English top-flight, along with a Europa League spot.

The 28-year-old is having a similarly impressive 2019/20 campaign, featuring 16 times already this season, including eight Europa League games.

He has missed just two Premier League games this season so far while Wolves were thrashed by Chelsea 5-2 in the first one, the Wanderers were held to a 1-1 draw by a 10-man Newcastle United in the second. He is out due to an ankle injury and it is still unknown as to when he may return to the starting XI.

Verdict

The French defender is one of the hottest prospects in the market. His defensive skills and height make him a good prospect during set-pieces.

He has been one of the regular starters for Nuno and has proved his value in one of the worlds’ most exciting league. Wolves shouldn’t even think twice about satisfying his demands and must keep him at the club as long as possible.
