West Ham Dragon

West Ham going all out to sign this 27-year-old defensive beast would solve some key issues – Agreed?

Why West Ham should go all out for Sevilla’s Sergi Gomez in January

According to a report from El Desmarque, West Ham United showed a keen interest in signing Sevilla defender Sergi Gomez in the summer transfer window. (h/t Football London)

The Hammers were interested in the 27-year-old defender during the summer, but they did not make any concrete bid to lure him away from the La Liga club.

Sergi Gomez, 27, joined Sevilla from Celta Vigo in 2018 and has established himself as a key player for the side. Last season, he made 32 appearances in La Liga and was also heavily involved in the Seville side’s Europa League campaign.

The Spanish defender has entered the prime years of his career and could be tempted to play in the Premier League. With that in mind, West Ham must reignite their interest in Gomez when the January transfer window commences.

West Ham have looked really shaky at the back so far this campaign, conceding five goals in their season opener against champions Manchester City. While they kept a clean sheet in the victory over Norwich City before the international break, Manuel Pellegrini’s defensive unit must tighten up.

Issa Diop and Fabian Balbuena were battered by the Manchester City players, with the former surprisingly looking out of depth. But Balbuena was dropped and replaced by Angelo Ogbonna in the next three league games, and while West Ham won two and drew one, Ogbonna didn’t appear convincing at all.

The Hammers did sign highly-rated Goncalo Cardoso from FC Porto in the summer but the 18-year-old is deemed one for the future. And then there is Winston Reid, who is nearing full fitness from the knee ligament rupture he had suffered last year.

Nevertheless, the east Londoners lack defensive depth and could do a smart job by signing Sergi Gomez.

A seasoned campaigner in the La Liga, Gomez would add more robustness, depth and physicality to the West Ham backline that has been mediocre so far this season.

A tall, strong and tough defender who can play out from the back as well as go for no-nonsense approach when required, the Spaniard could be a leader the Hammers have been lacking in their defence.

The ex-Barcelona youth product was one of the mainstays of Sevilla’s backline the last term and he is once again expected to play a key role for his club this season, meaning the defender certainly won’t come cheap should West Ham decide to go for him in January.

However, Gomez could be an upgrade on the error-prone Balbuena and the unreliable Ogbonna, while he’ll help to solve Pellegrini’s defensive conundrum.

Verdict

If West Ham are to pay over the odds for Gomez in January, they must do so without any second thoughts.
