Why West Ham must splash more than £12m to land this 28-year-old experienced campaigner

Why Craig Dawson would be a good signing for West Ham

West Ham are buzzing after the arrival of Manuel Pellegrini. The Chilean is one of the most honourable and prestigious managers in the World. David Sullivan has done a good job for the club. The London Stadium will be hoping to see a new brand of football played at home. Pellegrini is known for his fast-paced, counter-attacking play, the kind that is very popular among the Hammers.

But before the season gets underway, the club are certainly going to need new signings to take the team to the next level. The Hammers were leaky at the back last season, conceding a mammoth 68 goals in the league. Only Stoke City let in as many goals as the Hammers, and they were relegated. West Ham should consider themselves lucky.

The club have been linked with West Bromwich Albion centre-back Craig Dawson. Following the Baggies’ relegation to the Championship, the English defender could be convinced about a move.

He has plenty of Premier League experience and was one of the Baggies’ standout performers last season. Dawson is strong, tall, and commanding in the box. His authoritative presence makes it easier for his fellow defenders to stay on track.

Dawson made 28 appearances for West Brom last season, scoring 2 goals in the process. He is a defensively sound player, who rarely shies away from a challenge. The 28-year-old averaged 1.4 tackles and 1.9 interceptions per game last season.

He’s calm and composed on the ball. There was a certain element of cohesion between Dawson and Ahmed Hegazi. It’s a wonder how such a strong partnership didn’t save the club from relegation. But football is a team game, and in order for the team to win, everyone is going to have to perform.

Dawson is also very commanding in the air, with the defender winning an average of 4.1 aerial duels per game. Over the course of the season, the 28-year-old picked up 4 man of the match awards for the Baggies.

West Brom have reportedly rejected a £12million bid from West Ham but Manuel Pellegrini shouldn’t give up just yet. Maybe the Baggies are stalling in order to receive a higher fee. They are going to need replacements themselves after their dismal campaign.

With James Collins not at the club anymore, the Hammers are going to need a new man to take his place. Dawson would be a perfect choice. With a vast amount of experience, Dawson is also a leader at heart. He could become a key figure for the Hammers next season, provided Manuel Pellegrini signs the player.
