Why West Ham must complete a loan move for Barcelona’s 23-year-old defensive ace

Why West Ham Must Sign Barcelona’s Yerry Mina On Loan This Summer

As per a report from The Mirror, West Ham United are harbouring an interest in Barcelona defender Yerry Mina and want him on a loan deal this summer. Despite completing an exciting move to join the Catalan giants from Palmeiras only in January, the 23-year-old has found limited game time at the club.

In order to prove his worth to the top-brass and develop further, it is important for him to amass experience. The Hammers have been credited with an interest in the promising centre-back.

Mina impressed on his much-awaited Barcelona debut but he has been used rather sparingly by Ernesto Valverde. At present, the La Liga champions-elect have a solid central defensive partnership in the form of Gerard Pique and Samuel Umtiti and there seems to be no room for a player like Mina.

Thus, to gain more experience and develop further, it is imperative that the defender plays often. A move to join the Hammers could work wonders for him.

As far as West Ham are concerned, they are fighting tooth-and-nail to preserve their top-flight status beyond the end of this season. Currently placed 14th in the league standings, David Moyes and his men have their work cut out.

However, if they manage to survive and come out unscathed, it would make sense for the East London outfit to make a move for Mina, albeit temporarily.

Interestingly, an earlier report from The Mirror had credited the club with an interest in him prior to his transfer to Barcelona.

West Ham must sign defensive reinforcements in the summer. Surviving this season is key for the club but next season will be a major challenge in terms of putting up better performances and fielding a stronger backline.

Winston Reid continues to struggle with fitness concerns whereas James Collins’ contract expires at the end of this term. That leaves Declan Rice and Angelo Ogbonna as options but since the Hammers usually play with three men at the back, it is necessary to add another central defender to their ranks.

On that note, West Ham must do everything they can to sign Mina on a loan deal and this transfer could potentially become a win-win situation for all parties involved.
