Why West Ham must beat Tottenham to sign this Croatian midfield master this summer

Why West Ham must beat Tottenham to sign Real Madrid star Mateo Kovacic

One of the brightest talents Croatia have had in the World Cup is undoubtedly Mateo Kovacic. While he hasn’t started games owing to the presence of Modric and Rakitic, he has shown his class coming off the bench and assisting whenever possible.

Kovacic is also one player who has been earmarked by Real Madrid to be a star in their midfield in the future – taking over the reigns from Luka Modric.

However, at the age of 24, he is still developing but has proven that he has the ability to change games from the middle of the park.

Kovacic is restricted to bench appearances even at Real Madrid and this might prompt him to push for a move elsewhere, probably to the Premier League. That being said, a lot of clubs will look to get his signature but West Ham should really push for a move if the opportunity arises. Here’s why:

Mark Noble’s not getting younger

West Ham‘s heartbeat, Mark Noble has been around for a long time now, despite his relatively young age of 31. With a few more years left in him, the team need another midfield player to drive them forward and initiate attacks.

Kovacic could be the ideal man to control play from the middle of the park and is someone who can really make a difference in the Premier League.

Working with the likes of Kouyate could help West Ham dominate the midfield game and bully other teams with their pressing and effective passing.

His link-up with Lanzini could be interesting

While Lanzini is ruled out due to a long-term knee injury, his pace and skill on the ball are probably the best amongst all West Ham players. Working with him could unlock another dimension in Kovacic’s game and bring his brilliant inter-play into play.

Lanzini can work alongside Kovacic and use him as a decoy to initiate runs against high lines to really make it harder for opposition defenders.

He can bring the dynamism that West Ham are missing

Kovacic is a player who performs with a lot of flair. While West Ham had the likes of Joao Mario and Antonio in their squad, they weren’t able to bring the flair expected from them. Kovacic is one player who can shine in an instant and just takes one pass to unlock a defence.

West Ham can really benefit from a move for Kovacic and they do need a player who can control their midfield by being comfortable with the ball at his feet.
