West Brom simply cannot afford to let go of their key 29-year-old star and here’s why

West Brom opinion: Baggies should hold onto Jake Livermore in the summer

The Chronicle Live (h/t TeamTalk) has reported that Newcastle United have told West Brom that they can keep Dwight Gayle and Jacob Murphy. However, in return the Baggies have to hand them Salomon Rondon, Kieran Gibbs and Jake Livermore.

Clearly, West Brom would come short-handed, especially given the fact that they lose two players who have been crucial to their campagn.

Both Jake Livermore and Kieran Gibbs have been integral members of the Baggies, making a combined 67 appearances this season. Livermore would have played every game, had it not been for suspensions.

It shows just how important the 29-year-old has been to West Brom this season, playing a major role in them reaching the Championship’s top four.

That is the case, despite sacking former manager Darren Moore a few months earlier. An industrious midfielder, the 29-year-old has showcased many of his best attributes this season.

He combines his work-ethic along with a lot of dynamism. He also has the ability to find players with his tidy passing. However, his best attribute is his aggression.

He has averaged 1.1 fouls per game this season, produced 1.8 tackles, 1.1 interceptions and has only been dribbled past 0.4 times per game.

It goes to show just how invaluable a player he has been for West Brom and more importantly, how much they would struggle to replace him.

Swapping him for anyone would be detrimental for the Baggies. Even if they hold onto Dwight Gayle, it’s not enough as was seen in the preceding season.

Conclusion

West Bromwich Albion don’t have the flashiest players in the world but that isn’t to say that they don’t have class acts. Jake Livermore has been one of their best players this season and is someone who needs to be kept at the club for the foreseeable future.
