Back in January, the Sky Sports reported Watford’s interest in signing Lyon forward Maxwel Cornet. However, a deal didn’t go through as Lyon were reluctant to lose one of their prized assets in the midst of the season.
Maxwel Cornet, 23, joined Lyon from FC Metz back in 2015 and has gone onto appear in over 180 games across all competitions at the Groupama Stadium. The nippy winger enjoyed a fantastic 2018/19 season that saw him score 12 goals in 36 appearances.
The Ivorian caught the eye last season with his stunning performance against Manchester City in the Champions League group stages, scoring three goals in two games. Cornet, however, hasn’t been as effective as last season this time around and has just one goal in seven Ligue 1 games for Lyon.
Watford, meanwhile, are rock bottom in the Premier League table, without a win so far this season. Quique Sanchez Flores has returned to the Vicarage Road in a bid to turn the club’s fortunes, yet the Hornets continue to flounder.
Flores must turn things around quickly and get to January where he’ll be able to bring in fresh players.
The January transfer window represents Watford’s best chance to shake up the squad and push for avoiding the drop from the top-flight. While solving the defensive problems has to be a priority, Flores also cannot reject the idea of recruiting a forward.
Watford have managed just five goals in nine games, with the likes of Andy Gray, Ismaila Sarr, Roberto Pereyra and Gerard Deulofeu struggling in front of goal. Skipper Troy Deeney has been out since undergoing knee surgery in August, while Danny Welbeck faces months out with a hamstring problem.
If the Hornets are to avoid relegation, they need a goalscoring forward and thus signing Maxwel Cornet in January would make sense.
Cornet is a rapid winger who gets up and down the pitch with immense speed and intensity, showing real energy and purpose. His strong running, creativity and movement will be extremely effective in a Watford side lacking for inspiration.
The Ivory Coast international is a right-winger, who plays as an inverted winger. He often likes to cut inside to his favoured left foot instead of hugging the bylines.
The former FC Metz ace’s standout quality is his ability to make the right decision in the final third.
He is a good dribbler and ball carrier but most importantly, he brings a genuine goal threat whenever he gets on the ball in the attacking areas. All in all, he could be a good fit in Flores’ system at Watford.
If the Hornets manage to sign Cornet from Lyon in January, it would represent a massive coup for a struggling Premier League side.
