Man United would be very clever to snatch this French powerhouse in the summer and here’s why

Manchester United opinion: Red Devils should go for Adrien Rabiot

According to a report in the Sun, Premier League duo Chelsea and Manchester United are back in the hunt to sign PSG midfielder Adrien Rabiot.

The Frenchman was all but sure of agreeing on a deal with La Liga champions Barcelona, but the Catalans have been put off by the financial demands of the player (h/t Sun).

As a result of that, the Blues and the Red Devils, who have been tracking the player before, have come back in the fray to make an offer. While the former is currently serving a transfer ban, there is a massive chance for the latter to take this opportunity and sign the talented midfielder in the summer.

According to the report, Barcelona agreed on a five-year deal with the player on a free transfer, with a salary around £8.5m-per-season with an £8.5m sign-on fee.

However, Calciomercato suggests that the transfer took a twist when he parted ways with his agent (his mother). And now the Frenchman is holding out for a £13m-per-season salary.

Here’s why Manchester United should splash the salary cash on Rabiot and sign him in the summer:

United need someone like Rabiot in midfield

Manchester United are currently in a situation where they have enough quality to compete with the big teams, but not enough to challenge for the league title.

While their defence needs some surgery, the midfield is one area where addition of more quality would be ideal. The likes of Ander Herrera, Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic are good on their better days, but they struggle for consistency over the course of a season in terms of performance level.

Hence, getting a player of Rabiot’s quality, who can play several roles in the midfield would be perfect. The Frenchman can play in a double-pivot midfield, or as one of the attack-minded midfielders in a three-man midfield.

His ball-playing quality is right up there with the best and he possesses the work rate to be influential on the field without the ball as well. The 23-year-old’s height enables him to win aerial duels, which is always beneficial.

Even though the salary demand seems to be high, Rabiot’s quality on the field would cover up for that. Hence, United mustn’t think twice about making an offer to the Frenchman once the summer transfer window commences.
