Fight For The Dutchman – Why Tottenham Should Look To Hijack Liverpool’s Pursuit Of Virgil van Dijk

Tottenham Hotspur are one of the least busy clubs this transfer market as Mauricio Pochettino is still coy about his side’s chances this season. The Argentine manager is not looking to make too many big money signings this summer but he will definitely look to add players to particular roles in the squad for the upcoming league campaign.

While he will look to add to his attack and his midfield but Pochettino is also interested in adding a defender to his squad and has been linked with some fine players. But one player they should now look to sign is Virgil van Dijk.

Though not linked with a move for the Dutch international, Spurs can definitely look to improve their defence with the addition of the Southampton man this summer and for all they care, they might find it easier to land him than his top suitors Liverpool.

Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool failed miserably in their first approach as they had to apologize after making an illegal approach for the player early in the transfer market. Van Dijk still wants to move to Anfield but Liverpool have tied themselves in a loop where they cannot bid for his services until Southampton are ready to listen to offers.

Van Dijk is currently on a strike, not attending training sessions and photo shoots with the squad. But the Saints are still reluctant to sell to Liverpool at any price. Here is where Tottenham should jump in.

Virgil Van Dijk

The likes of Chelsea and Manchester City are keeping away from the £60m rated star, thanks to his price and his wish to play at Anfield. But Spurs have enough money to splash on Van Dijk and can lure him to the club with the opportunity of first team football.

Both Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen have been up there with the best in the league but Eric Dier and Kevin Wimmer are the only backups and not great ones at that. So Spurs could add Van Dijk and use the trio effectively, may be even in a 3-4-3 system, which will make their side the strongest defensive unit in the league.

Moreover, Southampton were also plotting a move for Wimmer recently as a replacement for Van Dijk and if Spurs let him go, they may as well be able to reduce the price of Van Dijk this summer. So surely, Tottenham should at least think about making a move for this Southampton want-away and hijack Liverpool’s move for the defender. Agree?
