Tottenham would find themselves in a real pickle by selling this lacklustre 25-year-old star despite struggles

Why Tottenham shouldn’t sell Eric Dier in January

Eric Dier has had a tough time at Tottenham since the second half of the previous season.

The English midfielder had to undergo surgery related to an appendix issue and missed part of the summer with another problem.

The 25-year-old has also been replaced by Tanguy Ndombele in the first-team after the Frenchman’s arrival in the summer.

Eric Dier

Moussa Sissoko is possibly playing the best football of his Tottenham career, and Harry Winks is the other option in the midfield.

Dier has just two starts to his name all season, with one coming in the Carabao Cup defeat by Colchester United.

He has looked a little rusty at times, and The Times claims that Dier is one of five players who could be sold in January (h/t Sun).

The 25-year-old has had his issues under Mauricio Pochettino regarding his form and decision making, however, Spurs should keep hold of him for now.

An experienced head in the team

Dier is one of the most experienced members of the Tottenham side and has grown immensely under Pochettino.

The former Sporting star can still do a decent job in the midfield and provides cover for Ndombele and Sissoko.

Ndombele has already missed some games this season and Spurs need to keep options for the remainder of the season.

Selling Dier would earn Tottenham some change, however, there is no guarantee they would get a quality replacement in the winter window.

The 25-year-old could also be played in the defence after Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld’s struggles this season.

Dier has experience of playing at the back, and it will be interesting to see how things develop with the Englishman in the coming weeks.

Tottenham don’t have other quality options in the midfield with Oliver Skipp and Victor Wanyama on the books too.

Wanyama is another player that is on the chopping block (h/t Sun) and selling him first makes more sense than Dier.

Verdict

The English midfielder was one of Tottenham’s stars from a few seasons back, and it is concerning how much his form has fallen over the past couple of years.

However, he still has much to offer Tottenham and should be kept in the team till the end of the campaign.
