According to a report from the Daily Mail, Tottenham are close to re-signing goalkeeper Michel Vorm on a free transfer just three-and-a-half months after releasing him.
The Dutchman, 35, spent five years in north London playing back-up to Hugo Lloris after joining from Swansea City in 2014. But after being released at the end of last season, he is apparently on his way back to the Spurs, who have been left short between the sticks after a dislocated elbow ruled Hugo Lloris out until the start of 2020.
Lloris has been Tottenham’s undisputed no.1 under Mauricio Pochettino, despite making some glaring errors in goal in the last few years.
He got injured in the game against Brighton, with the World Cup winner stretchered off in agony after his early blunder led to home side’s opener in a 3-0 win over Mauricio Pochettino’s side.
The Frenchman dislocated his shoulder but will not require surgery. However, he will not be able to return to training until next year. That being said, Pochettino should quickly snap up Michel Vorm.
Should Vorm decide to return to Spurs, he’ll compete for a place alongside Paulo Gazzaniga, who replaced Lloris in the loss at Brighton. Gazzaniga is expected to deputise for the injured Frenchman, as he did while Vorm was at the club last season.
Beyond Gazzaniga, there is a dearth of senior-level experience, with the Tottenham U23s’ keeper Alfie Whiteman having acted as third-choice this campaign.
That’s when the signing of Vorm would make sense for Spurs. He made four appearances for Pochettino’s side last season, including two games in the Premier League. In all, the veteran shot-stopper played 47 times throughout his time at the club.
Vorm is a very capable goalkeeper. He is an excellent shot-stopper, commands his area with authority, and is decent with his feet. Pochettino can trust the experienced Dutchman, after five years of working together at Tottenham and landing him on a free is the obvious solution to Lloris’ injury.
Hence, Vorm’s acquisition is an absolute no-brainer. However, it remains to be seen whether the 35-year-old will be offered a deal until January, or until the end of the season.
