Over 200 goals scored – Tottenham signing this veteran Frenchman from La Liga would be a deadly move

Why Tottenham should plot a January swoop for Kevin Gameiro

Tottenham are descending into crisis, just five months after reaching the Champions League final.

Having reached last season’s Champions League final and secured another top-four finish, Spurs were expected to kick on again in the current campaign. But that hasn’t been the case, leaving the north London club in an utter mess at the moment.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side were sent crashing out of the Carabao Cup by League Two Colchester on Tuesday after a team packed full of stars failed to produce the goods.

Pochettino has overseen a period of gradual improvement in north London but he has been unable to inspire his team to make the start they were after, with just eight points taken from a possible 18 in the league while another route to potential silverware has been cut off after being dumped out of the Carabao Cup.

It isn’t like Pochettino wasn’t backed by the club during the summer transfer window. After drawing blanks in the last two windows, Tottenham made a number of exciting signings this time around.

While the new players need time to adapt to the demands of Premier League football, the fans are no longer willing to play the patient game.

Pochettino deserves tons of credit for making Spurs a regular fixture in the top four in recent years, but it wouldn’t have been possible without the contributions of for Harry Kane.

The England international’s amazing goalscoring record has carried this Spurs side through so many tough fixtures and they really look ordinary without him in the team.

After years of looking, Tottenham once again failed to sign a back-up striker for Kane. After releasing Fernando Llorente in the summer, it was one of the most important areas Pochettino had to address.

Maybe, teenager Troy Parrott enjoys his breakthrough campaign and rightly challenges Kane for a spot in the team but he is young and simply cannot be thrown straight in the first-team.

In Kane’s absence, Pochettino can either look to Son Heung-min or Lucas Moura to lead the line, but both the players are excellent down the flanks. As Kane seems has been unlucky with injuries in recent times, Pochettino shouldn’t take a risk this season and go for Valencia’s Kevin Gameiro.

Valencia striker Kevin Gameiro, 32, who was linked with Tottenham last year, has scored over 200 goals in his club career. His best season came in 2015/16 when he netted 29 goals in all competitions for Sevilla. This season the 32-year-old has scored two goals in five appearances.

The Frenchman is an established, proven striker, having played at the very top level for the past decade, and his robust playing style would be perfectly suited to the physical nature of the Premier League.

He is a lethal finisher when presented with a goalscoring opportunity, but it is his all-round game that would make him such a good addition to the Tottenham squad. All in all, Gameiro could be the perfect back-up for Kane.

Verdict

At the age of 32, Gameiro could be willing to cover and compete with Kane. And he would be a smart addition for Pochettino’s side if he agrees to that challenge in January. Hence, Spurs must revive their interest in the ex-Sevilla and Atletico Madrid man.
