Tottenham signing this Serie A powerhouse in the summer would strengthen their midfield for a number of years – opinion

Tottenham opinion: Spurs want Diawara – a good Dembele replacement?

Calciomercato has reported that Tottenham want to make a move for Napoli star Amadou Diawara. Tottenham are looking for a new midfielder and believe that the Napoli man can be the answer to their problems in the summer.

At the moment, the North London side sit in third place but do have three top-six clubs on hot on their heels. The race for the final two spots in the Premier League is still on and it is a three-way battle.

For Tottenham, losing Mousa Dembele hurt the club more than they ever expected, with the Belgian leaving in the January window. They’ve failed to replace the 31-year-old star despite Mauricio Pochettino successfully transforming Moussa Sissoko into a midfielder.

However, it has not been enough and unless the North London side add someone like Amadou Diawara, it can’t be achieved. A talented midfielder, the 21-year-old has struggled to make an impact at Napoli.

A move to the Partenopei was supposed to change Diawara’s life, with a lot expected out of the midfielder after a rather successful spell at Bologna.

However, despite the fact that Carlo Ancelotti hasn’t used him much, the move would be absolutely perfect for Tottenham. A defensive superstar, Diawara is exceptionally strong on the ball and very confident.

But what makes him a great replacement for Dembele is his ability to move the play forward. Despite predominantly being a defensive midfielder, he excels at creating chances.

His passing statistics are incredible, with him averaging 90% (Whoscored) since his move to Napoli. It further shows why Spurs have to make a move. There will be concerns as to whether or not he can adjust to the Premier League but the 21-year-old’s mentality and physicality will help him adjust.

This is a move that will be beneficial to both sides on the table. The fact that Amadou Diawara is still only 21 years old should see him command a price-tag large enough to convince Napoli to let him go.

Conclusion

Tottenham need Amadou Diawara more than any other player right now. The 21-year-old would slot in perfectly alongside the likes of Harry Winks, Dele Alli, Harry Kane and the rest.

The North London side would get few players in the world as technically, physically and defensively adept as Diawara.
