Tottenham must retain this 17-year-old academy gem whose meteoric rise has attracted German giants

Why Tottenham should keep hold of Troy Parrott at all costs amidst German links

According to Football London, Tottenham academy gem Troy Parrott is the subject of interest from Bundesliga heavyweights Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund.

Dortmund struck gold by luring Jadon Sancho to Germany from Man City back in 2017 and they are hoping to replicate that success by getting their hands on Parrott, who made his first-team debut for the Lilywhites against Colchester United in the EFL Cup earlier this season.

Sancho’s raging success in the Bundesliga and his meteoric rise to a fully-fledged England international over the past twelve months has prompted several other British-based starlets to head to the German top-flight in search of greener pastures.

Ademola Lookman and Reece Oxford completed permanent moves to RB Leipzig and Augsburg respectively this summer, while Jonjoe Kenny and Lewis baker departed Everton and Chelsea on loan spells at Schalke and Fortuna Dusseldorf.

Now, as per the report, both Dortmund and Bayern have been alerted to t vast potential of Troy Parrott and the Bundesliga duo hoping to lure the 17-year-old away from North London, with the promise of more regular minutes likely to appeal to the talented teenager.

The Dublin-born striker is held in high regard by the youth coaching staff at Spurs and has been widely tipped to take over the reins from Harry Kane in the years to come.

Parrott burst on to the scene for the U-18s in the U-18 Premier League in the 2017-18 campaign before setting the stage on fire with a tally of 14 goals in 9 U-18 Premier League appearances the last term.

The 17-year-old also featured for Tottenham’s U-19s in the UEFA Youth League last season and has enjoyed a transition to the U-23s in the Premier League 2 Division 2 this term.

Mauricio Pochettino included the highly-rated academy prospect in his squads for the pre-season fixtures, with the youngster playing a part in the International Champions Cup and the Audi Cup.

Furthermore, Parrott also caught the eye for the Republic of Ireland U-21s at the 2019 U-21 UEFA European Championship held in Italy and San Marino earlier in the summer, scoring three in three games.

The 17-year-old has already made his senior professional bow and is expected to be handed with more first-team opportunities in the near future.

To put things into perspective, Troy Parrott looks like a player with serious potential at just 17 and Tottenham can ill-afford to part ways with one of the brightest talents to have emerged from their youth system in recent times.

The Lilywhites could be left red-faced if the Irishman goes on to fulfil his promise at some other club in Germany, and with that in mind, they should avoid offloading him for any sum of money.

The teenage hitman is already a prolific marksman at youth and reserve levels but he is still very much in his formative years and has some way to go before he is ready to stake a claim for a substantial role in the Premier League but Spurs need to be patient with his development.

Ideally, a loan spell at some Football League club would be the next big step in Parrott’s development curve and Tottenham should allow him to gain some professional experience in senior men’s football in a bid to polish his game.

Verdict

Harry Kane continues to be the club’s go-to man in front of goal but they are yet to find an ideal understudy to the England international and someone like Troy Parrott could well be a perfect fit for that role in the next couple of years if he continues his development down the right direction.

Alternatively, Tottenham’s nightmarish start to the season certainly calls for Pochettino to make some bold changes to the eleven and Parrott, who has been a consistent performer for the youth sides, could find himself fast-tracked into the senior ranks somewhere down the line.

Suffice to say, the fans and the club faithful have high hopes of Troy Parrott making a big impact in the years to come and parting ways with him is a blunder that Spurs just cannot afford.
