Why Tottenham should keep hold of Son Heung-min amidst interest

According to Express, Juventus and Napoli are monitoring Tottenham star Son Heung-min ahead of the January transfer window. The South Korea skipper, 27, has impressed during his time at Tottenham and has become an indispensable player for Mauricio Pochettino.

He did struggle in his first season with Spurs after joining from Bayer Leverkusen in 2015 but he is now one of the best attackers in the Premier League, having enjoyed three great seasons with the club.

However, with Tottenham’s form dipping and a place in next season’s Champions League potentially under threat, Juventus and Napoli are looking to sign Son Heung-min in January.

Spurs have endured a rough start to the season and find themselves in the bottom half of the table after the 2-1 defeat to Liverpool at Anfield.

They were supposed to go shoulder-to-shoulder with Liverpool and Manchester City in the title race this term following a promising season last year but a rather indifferent and uninspired start to the season paints a different picture of the club right now.

Truth be told, Spurs have lacked inspiration in all departments. Hence, it is important for Pochettino to keep hold of his important players at the club and retaining Son Heung-min’s services should be an absolute priority.

Son, who currently earns £140,000-a-week, has established himself as a fan favourite since he joined from Bayer Leverkusen in 2015. He scored 20 goals and supplied 10 assists as Tottenham reached the Champions League final last season.

The 27-year-old has a contract that runs until 2023, having put pen to paper on an extension in 2018. He is a versatile forward who has played in various positions across the front-line.

Son can change a game in the blink of an eye and he has been one of the rare bright sparks in an otherwise disappointing campaign for Tottenham.

Verdict

Son is a valuable asset to Pochettino’s Spurs. Selling Son would be one of the most unpopular moves the club could make right now. With Tottenham in a great position given that Son has a contract until 2023, the Italian clubs must be told to move on.
