Tottenham breaking all barriers to sign this 23-year-old defensive mainstay would be smart business

Why Tottenham should go all out to sign Robin Koch in January

Back in May, the Sun had claimed that Tottenham were interested in signing SC Freiburg defender Robin Koch, but a move didn’t materialise.

Robin Koch, 23, has been a mainstay at Freiburg since signing from hometown club Kaiserslautern in 2017. His impressive performances at the back previous campaign helped Freiburg to a 13-placed finish. He is already amongst the promising defenders in the Bundesliga and his solid displays this season recently earned him called up to Joachim Löw’s Germany for the first time.

The 23-year-old made his international debut in the friendly 2-2 draw with Argentina last week. With Robin Koch’s stock on the rise, the January transfer window could just be the right time for Tottenham to make a move for the defender.

Tottenham have looked defensively all over the place this season. Juan Foyth is out injured and Davinson Sanchez has looked out of depth, while Belgian duo—Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen—will be free agents at the end of the season. It is also worth noting both Alderweireld and Vertonghen are in their 30s and don’t have many quality years left in them.

Alderweireld and Vertonghen have formed one of the best defensive partnerships in Premier League football during the last few years. But they have shown signs of ageing this campaign and it is high time Mauricio Pochettino thinks of replacing either one of them.

That’s why Tottenham should make a move for Robin Koch, who would do a decent job in replacing either one of Alderweireld or Vertonghen and Spurs have Sanchez and Foyth as options in central defence as well. The 23-year-old has the potential to improve further and could be used very well by Pochettino.

Standing at 6ft 3in tall, Koch is extremely strong in the air and possesses great strength which helps him to overcome experienced opposition attackers in defensive duels.

He is a modern-day centre-half, extremely comfortable in bringing the ball out from the back and launching attacks for his team. The one-cap Germany international is a commanding presence at both ends of the pitch and can make crucial interceptions for his side.

A rangy battering ram, the 23-year-old is a real warrior on the field and never hesitates to put his body on the line for the team.

Koch has all the required qualities to thrive in the Premier League, and at 23, he has a bright future. Truly, a move to Spurs would be a step in the right direction for the defender.

Verdict

Bringing Koch over during the winter transfer window would give him time to adjust to demands of the Premier League. Hence, it’s important to act quickly and sign the German defender in the New Year.
