Why Tottenham should go all out for this American midfielder who starred at the World Cup

Why Hector Herrera could be an excellent addition for Tottenham in January

Tottenham Hotspur are interested in signing Porto midfielder Hector Herrera in the January transfer window, reports the Calciomercato.

The north London club were the only Premier League team who failed to bring in any new signing during the summer transfer window. With the squad very thin to handle four different competitions during the course of the season, Mauricio Pochettino needs some financial backing for spending in January.

And it appears Pochettino wants to bolster his midfield options in January, and has targeted a move for Herrera, who was in action for Mexico at the 2018 World Cup.

Surely, a midfielder should be a priority for Spurs given the questions over Mousa Dembele’s future. (Sun)

Herrera, 28, who starred for Porto since his 2013 move from Pachuca, was one of the keystones in the club’s title triumph last season. He has made almost 200 appearances for the Portuguese champions and continues to be one of the first names on the teamsheet.

The 28-year-old impressed for Mexico at Russia this summer, which makes it somewhat clear that he has the talent and drive to succeed in the Premier League.

Herrera is an energetic box-to-box midfielder who is also capable of playing in a deeper role. The Mexican possesses an impressive distribution in the middle of the park from which he can unlock defences.

He is a non-stop runner on and off the ball, often receiving widespread plaudits for his excellent work ethic. The 28-year-old has strong holding traits, drags opponents to create space for his teammates, is clinical when it comes to tackling and reads the game well from the middle of the park.

Since moving to Porto from Pachuca, Herrera has established himself as one of the top central midfielders in the Portuguese league. A move to Tottenham would see him fight for a place with the Victor Wanyama, Moussa Sissoko, Mousa Dembele, Eric Dier and Harry Winks in the first-team.

The Mexican ace will add more depth and strength to the Spurs midfield, meaning Pochettino should go all out to sign the 28-year-old from Porto in January. Even though Herrera will turn 29 in April, he is undoubtedly an attractive option. In the grand scheme of things, he can also be Dembele’s replacement if the Belgian leaves the north Londoners in January or next summer.
