Why Tottenham Over Manchester United Would Be The Ideal Destination For Leicester City’s Harry Maguire

As per a report from The Sun, several Premier League bigwigs are keen on a summer deal for Leicester City star Harry Maguire. Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur have also been credited with an interest in the 25-year-old and based on what he can offer, it is safe to say that both clubs could use a player like him.

The Sun claim that Leicester are demanding an eye-watering £50million fee for his services and while that is a price too steep, it must be noted that Maguire is a supremely talented individual.

Ever since he joined the Foxes from Hull City last year, Maguire has been a beacon of hope for the club. Right now, Leicester might be in a safe zone but prior to Craig Shakespeare’s sacking, the club were living dangerously close to the relegation zone.

However, Maguire continued to deliver impressive performances and he has thrived under new manager Claude Puel. A ball-playing centre-back by trade, Maguire is deservedly regarded as one of the best across England and for all right reasons.

The report from The Sun also claims that Leicester view him as a future captain but they might have to put those plans on hold, with United and Tottenham circling for a deal. Prying Maguire away from Leicester will not be a cakewalk by any measure but if the move were to happen, which club should he choose?

At Manchester United, Jose Mourinho’s lack of quality central defenders is quite apparent. Phil Jones continues to be in and out of injuries while Eric Bailly has struggled to make an impact since his return from a long-term absence.

Victor Lindelof has failed to establish himself in the first-team while Chris Smalling’s performances are extremely hit-or-miss. If United are to push for a title win next season, they will need a quality defender and Maguire certainly fits the bill.

However, the player is likely to have a better chance of developing and reaching his true potential at Tottenham. Mauricio Pochettino has been lauded time and again for his attempts to build a new-age side by relying on homegrown English talent and Maguire falls right into that category.

Furthermore, the club do need a new centre-back. Toby Alderweireld’s future continues to be uncertain, according to The Independent, and although Davinson Sanchez and Jan Vertonghen have played admirably, it is important for the club to sign a new central defender.

Pochettino has often utilised a three-man backline in the past and having Maguire in the ranks would certainly provide him with the option of doing so. Thus, given a choice, Maguire would be better off at Tottenham.
