Why Tottenham over Arsenal would be the perfect destination for Kalvin Phillips

Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips is attracting Premier League interest after his eye-catching performances this season, reports the Bristol Live.

Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal are among the host of Premier League clubs leading the chase for the 22-year-old’s signature.

Phillips has been in fine form under Marcelo Bielsa, whose Leeds side have enjoyed a stellar start to the Championship campaign. While the midfielder is enjoying life at his hometown club, a move to the Premier League would be hard to resist.

Phillips is a product of Leeds’ academy and is enjoying a good season. Under Bielsa, the 22-year-old has played in the deep-lying playmaker’s role due to his calmness on the ball and distribution skill that set him apart.

He has emerged as a promising central midfielder in the Championship, having already provided two assists in 10 league appearances for Leeds so far this season.

During the 2017/18 campaign, the 22-year-old scored seven goals and provided three assists in 36 Championship starts for the Whites but Phillips’s overall game appears to have matured under the watchful eyes of Bielsa.

The player who seemed to impress and frustrate in equal measure last season has become an integral part of Bielsa’s plans at Elland Road.

Surely, there have been a couple of underwhelming performances from Phillips but overall, he has been really good and has adapted to Bielsa’s high-pressing style of play.

At Arsenal, Unai Emery has an array of midfielders in his team that can play in the holding role, central midfield and also in advanced midfield. The likes of Granit Xhaka, Lucas Torreira, Aaron Ramsey, Matteo Guendouzi and Mohamed Elneny are midfield options for Emery and looking at the current scenario, it would be difficult for Phillips to break into Arsenal’s starting XI.

Tottenham Hotspur, on the other hand, are still unsure about Mousa Dembele’s future as he enters the final months of his contract in North London. Dembele’s contract expires at the end of the season and with no new deal agreed yet, Mauricio Pochettino has to start making plans for the future.

Phillips and Dembele are different types of players but going by Pochettino’s ability to nurture young talents, the Leeds prospect could certainly become his new project. And if Phillips gets a chance to choose between Tottenham and Arsenal, he should pick the former without any second thought.
