Enough is enough: Tottenham must ruthlessly offload this £11m outcast in January

Why Tottenham must offload forgotten midfielder Victor Wanyama

According to Telegraph, Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho is willing to let forgotten midfielder Victor Wanyama leave the club.

Back in the summer, former Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino tried to offload Wanyama but a possible move to Belgian side Club Bruges collapsed on transfer deadline day.

New manager Mourinho, meanwhile, wants to trim his Tottenham squad, which has 25 players at the moment, and is ready to sacrifice a few of them including the out-of-favour Wanyama.

The 28-year old has fallen down the pecking order at Tottenham and has made only 4 appearances from all competitions, playing a total of just 122 minutes of football this season.

Wanyama, who joined Tottenham from Premier League rivals Southampton for £11million back in 2016, has played 97 matches for the Lilywhites, scoring 7 times.

The midfield anchor made just 14 league appearances last season and has found it extremely difficult to make it to the playing XI, with a host of players already fighting for a starting place.

Tottenham currently have a squad filled with midfielders, which includes the likes of summer signing Tanguy Ndombele, Mousa Sissoko, Harry Winks and Eric Dier, all vying for a starting place in the team.

The Kenyan captain’s few appearances for the club in the last couple of years reflect the fact that he has become one of the unwanted faces in the side.

Wanyama, who was impressive in his time at Southampton, had come to Tottenham carrying a good reputation, which saw Pochettino offering him an important role at the club in his debut season.

He made a total of 36 league appearances that season and contributed to his side by finding the back of the net 4 times. However, a cartilage injury followed soon, due to which he was on the fringes for almost half the season, eventually losing his starting place.

From then on, Wanyama has found it extremely difficult to nail down a spot for himself, with injuries and inconsistent form making it almost impossible for him to make a comeback.

From 36 games in his first season to 18 in his second, and 13 in his third, Wanyama’s four-year stint at Tottenham has been going from bad to worse, with the midfielder being a completely forgotten face at the club.

Verdict

It is almost clear that Tottenham are making no use of Wanyama at the moment and with the midfielder clearly not included in Mourinho’s plans, holding on to him would be foolish.

Hence, Tottenham would be doing a world of good for both parties if they offload the defensive midfielder as soon as possible.
