Tottenham have only won three of their 12 Premier League games this season to sit 14th in the table – 11 points off fourth-placed Manchester City.
Despite reaching a first-ever Champions League final in June, Spurs’ domestic form has been on the decline for some time.
Mauricio Pochettino could also lose some players in 2020, with the likes of Christian Eriksen, Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen all out of contract at the end of the season. Spurs have also been promoting young talents lately.
Their defensive problems just don’t seem to have an end. The likes of Davinson Sanchez, Alderweireld and Vertonghen have looked woefully out of depth, while Juan Foyth has just returned from injury.
With Alderweireld and Vertonghen out of contract next summer, Pochettino must sign an experienced centre-half in January.
Back in August, German newspaper Bild (h/t The Daily Star) claimed that Tottenham were interested in signing Borussia Monchengladbach defender Matthias Ginter. While a move didn’t materialize, Spurs must rekindle their interest in the German World Cup winner in January.
Matthias Ginter, 25, has played a key role in recent years for the German national side. He was part of Joachim Low’s World Cup squad which won the 2014 tournament in Brazil and has made 26 appearances in total for the senior team.
The defender is massively experienced at the top level, having played close to 300 senior games for club and country. The 25-year-old is at the perfect stage to take the big step of moving to the Premier League and Tottenham should snap him up in January.
Ginter can play as a right-back or a defensive midfielder but his best position is in the heart of the defence.
Thus, Tottenham can solve multiple problems by signing the Germany international. The ex-Borussia Dortmund man would do a good job by replacing either Alderweireld or Vertonghen, whilst adding much-needed stability and robustness to Spurs’ backline.
Ginter’s experience at the highest level and international pedigree would help him slot seamlessly. The defender would be a superb addition for Pochettino’s side.
