The leader they need? – Here’s why Man Utd signing this 30-year-old World Cup winner makes total sense

Why Thomas Muller would be a smart signing for Manchester United

According to a report from the Metro, Manchester United and Arsenal have been put on red alert as Thomas Muller has asked to leave Bayern Munich.

The German forward, 30, has started just one of Bayern Munich’s last eight games in all competitions. He was an unused sub in the 7-2 defeat of Tottenham and has started just one of Bayern’s last six Bundesliga games.

Thomas Muller has fallen out of favour under Niko Kovac, with the Bayern boss preferring summer loan additions Philippe Coutinho and Ivan Perisic ahead of him. Manchester United and Arsenal have been linked with the German in the past but he was happy to stay put at his boyhood club, who he joined at the age of 11.

However, after almost two decades with the club, the forward has decided to leave after growing tired of a lack of playing time under Kovac. That being said, Manchester United should beat Arsenal to the signing of Thomas Muller in January.

Under the leadership of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Manchester United have made their worst Premier League start in history and their worst in 30 years. The 1-0 defeat to Newcastle United on Sunday meant the Red Devils went into the international break with just two wins out of eight games this season.

Solskjaer allowed both Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez to join Inter in the summer but United failed to recruit a new striker.

With Anthony Martial out injured, Marcus Rashford struggling to deliver the goods in front of goal and Mason Greenwood having just turned 18, Solskjaer has now indicated that United’s priority in the January transfer window is to bolster his attacking options with a new striker.

An experienced head in the forward department is desperately needed at Old Trafford and that would make Muller a perfect fit. The Germany international has hit close to 190 goals for Bayern, even though he hasn’t been a prolific goalscorer at the Allianz Arena for the last few seasons.

Hard-working and so dangerous in and around the box, the 30-year-old can play in various roles across the front-line. A calm finisher and creator of goals, Muller is a player who can find gaps in the opposition defence and create havoc.

He is technically gifted and tactically versatile, known for his spatial awareness, intelligence, composure and positioning. The 100-cap German international could bring a clinical edge that the current United side lack in the final third.

Verdict

Adding a massively experienced player like Muller, who still has plenty to offer at 30, to the likes of Martial, Rashford and Greenwood could be perfect. He’ll undeniably bolster Solskjaer’s attacking options at Old Trafford, helping the Red Devils achieve a top-four finish this season.
