Tottenham fans were left frustrated last season, as a run of four winless matches at the end, resulted in them not only slipping out of the title race but also finishing behind their arch-rivals Arsenal. However, this should not take away from the fact that Spurs were brilliant for the majority of the campaign and there were plenty of positives to take forward to the next season. Pochettino has a young and energetic squad with quality players all over the pitch. He will be working hard this summer to plug the gaps in the squad so that the North London team can mount a proper title push next season and compete well in the Champions League.
With European commitments this season, it is necessary Spurs get in the reinforcements who can step up in place of first team players as quality covers. The signing of Victor Wanyama and Vincent Janssen have sorted out two problem areas from last year but we still expect some new faces to walk through the gates at White Hart Lane to sign on the dotted line. According to the recent reports in the Media, Tottenham are getting ready to offer a new five-year contract to Eric Dier for his superb form over the past year for club and country. The bumper new five-year contract will be worth £70,000 a week, making Dier one of the best-paid players at White Hart Lane next season.
Dier was the stand-out player in what was a disastrous campaign for England in the recently concluded European Championship. There were some question marks over Pochettino’s decision to play Dier as the central defensive midfielder at the start of last season. However, the England international proved everyone wrong and became a rock solid shield in front of the back four, that went on to have the best defensive record in the league last season.
Although Dier signed a 5-year contract extension only last year, it appears that Tottenham chief Daniel Levy wants to be sure of the former Sporting Lisbon ace’s future at White Hart Lane. Given how impressive Dier has been in central-midfield, one expects him to be the number one choice in that central midfield region along with either Dembele or Wanyama.
During the Euro 2016, in the first match against Russia Dier capped a fine display with a magnificent free-kick into the top corner in the 73rd minute, opening England’s account for the campaign. He was even more brilliant in the second match against wales, where he managed to keep the world’s most expensive player Gareth Bale quiet until Joe Hart’s horrendous error. The 22-year old isn’t afraid of going into challenges, while also being quite adept at launching attacks from the back with pinpoint passes upfront. He will be crucial to how Tottenham progress over the next few years under the leadership of Pochettino.
