Why this talented Real Madrid star should stay put at Bernabeu despite £88m Man Utd interest

Premier League giants Manchester United are reportedly interested in signing Real Madrid’s Marco Asensio in the summer transfer window and have made a £88m offer.

Jose Mourinho’s United finished second this season with Manchester City winning the Premier League. The difference between the two Manchester clubs was 19 points, which is humiliating considering the quality Mourinho possesses in his squad.

When Alexis Sanchez arrived from Arsenal in January, the Chilean was supposed to become an instant hit at Old Trafford by bolstering the attack. However, the script turned out to be entirely different as Sanchez delivered in patches.

Following Sanchez’s signing, Mourinho has been adamant that he won’t sign any attacking players in the summer transfer window.

The Portuguese felt he has a complete attacking force but after a toothless display in the FA Cup final defeat against Chelsea in the absence of Lukaku, the United manager has certainly got a reality check.

A dismal showing in the FA Cup final could be a major reason for Mourinho’s interest in signing an attacker, reportedly Real Madrid’s Marco Asensio.

Asensio is a gifted attacker and has not enjoyed a very good season with Real Madrid, finishing the season placed third, 17 points adrift of champions and traditional rivals Barcelona. The 22-year-old, considered as one of the hottest prospects in European football, enjoyed a blistering start but faded as the season wore on.

Asensio has contributed with crucial goals and assists throughout this campaign but lost his place in the starting XI after a certain point in time.

Having broken into the first-team last season and playing a pivotal part in their Champions League-winning campaign, Asensio now finds himself on the bench more often.

It is indeed frustrating for a young player of Asensio’s calibre to find himself struggling to get regular playing opportunities but the current situation asks for patience from the talented Spaniard.

Ideally, he has been Zidane’s go-to man along with Lucas Vazquez when Real didn’t play well this season. The 22-year-old is Zidane’s super-sub and he has proved it with his impactful performances against Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain, Juventus and Bayern Munich.

When Asensio was playing well in the first half of the season, Zidane stuck with him by offering him regular game time but after a sustained period of poor showing, the manager limited him to a substitute’s role, which showed how well Zidane has managed the player.

The French tactician didn’t completely abandon Asensio but rather used him as an impact substitute to help the player gain back his confidence.

Real’s transition phase is not far away. Gareth Bale and Karim Benzema have struggled, while Cristiano Ronaldo isn’t that lethal in front of goal as he used to be.

Places in the forward line would be up for grabs soon and Asensio would have a fantastic opportunity to cement his place in the starting line-up.

Also, considering United’s attacking options, Asensio is not going to break into the starting XI. Even if he makes a move to United, he is very young and could fail to cope with the high-intensity demands of the Premier League.

Hence, it would be wise for Asensio to stay put at Madrid and continue his development. He is getting regular game time there and the 22-year-old’s minutes are only going to increase in the future if he keeps performing well.
