Snub Them Marcus! – Why Rashford Should Ignore Real Madrid’s Interest And Stay With Manchester United

The Spanish League is one of the richest leagues in Europe and it does not come as a shock that clubs in the domestic league in Spain are linked with superstar who would demand outrageous record fees for transfers away from their current clubs. Real Madrid and Barcelona are dominant forces not only in Spain but also worldwide and have a history of luring away elite players from other leagues.

One such story run by Daily Mail reveals that Real Madrid are eyeing a sensational summer swoop for Manchester United striker Marcus Rashford. The report also claims that Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane will move for Rashford only if he fails to land no.1 target – Tottenham’s Harry Kane.

It is tough to decline an offer from European champions Madrid, given the stature, history and every player’s dream to play for the club. There have been various instances in the past where a Manchester United player has left the club for Madrid. David Beckham, Ruud van Nistelrooy and Cristiano Ronaldo are a few of them to fall in that category.

The Los Blancos’ recent interest in signing emerging United talent Rashford leaves us with no surprises. Such has been the case of Rashford’s meteoric rise from being an unknown academy player to becoming one of the brightest young talents across Europe to embrace the game.

Rashford wasn’t even meant to get his United debut when he did on February 25, 2016. His Europa League brace against Midtjylland was the beginning of the teenager’s astonishing rise. And since that night, the striker has not looked back.

Rashford hasn’t stayed as a student for long; he’s now an established first-team player at Manchester United and also an England international. There were times last season when the striker was thrown into the dark by manager Jose Mourinho. The signing of the experienced Zlatan Ibrahimovic last campaign saw the teenager drift from a centre-forward role to a wide role; which, contrastingly, many felt was a good chance for him to develop his versatility.

However, a long-term injury to Ibrahimovic meant Rashford could finally be unleashed as a striker for the new season but Mourinho’s mega signing of Romelu Lukaku from Everton this summer meant Rashford had to wait for his chance to play centrally.

Lukaku’s move questioned Rashford’s future but in just a season under Mourinho, the English striker has developed his overall game by leaps and bounds. Perhaps most importantly, the United boss now rates him after a shaky start where it seemed like the Portuguese didn’t favour Rashford.

The pacy forward has undoubtedly become one of Mourinho’s key men this season, as the Portuguese looks determined to bring the lost glory back to the club. This season, United are enjoying a rollicking start with Rashford being one of the chief contributors, with 3 goals and 3 assists in 9 league games. It is also apparent that Mourinho trusts Rashford more than Anthony Martial, who has also been a live wire this term.

Coming back to Madrid’s interest; however enticing the move might be for Rashford, despite the chance to play for one of the best teams in the continent, he should stay with the Red Devils. There is a notion that Spanish football does not seem like the best choice for him.

Rashford surely has made a big impact in his current team, but he still needs to develop his game, and he wouldn’t be able to do it in Spain. The forward likes speed, and although Spanish football is fast, it does not compare to Premier League by any means.

At Santiago Bernabeu, Zidane has a plethora of attacking talent at his disposal. The likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema, Gareth Bale, Isco, Marco Asensio and Lucas Vazquez have all shared the attacking responsibilities of the side this season.

While Ronaldo has slowly started fading and Benzema not being a top predator like yesteryear, the rest of the players are expected to stay for a long time and adding Rashford to the mix would provide the gaffer with another headache on how to include him the squad.

After Alvaro Morata’s departure to Chelsea earlier this summer, Madrid are in dire need of a striker. They want young talent to groom going forward and, given the Wythenshawe-born Rashford is one of England’s brightest prospects, he certainly fits the bill.

But United and Madrid have endured a fractious relationship since the David De Gea saga and recently after Morata’s transfer; Mourinho will be reluctant to let any of his best players leave.

Despite the interest, Rashford, a boyhood United fan, is unlikely to push for a move to Madrid as he has a contract until 2020. Having got the backing of everyone around the club, the Mancunian has all the potential to become a true Manchester United great.
