According to a report by The Sun, north London rivals Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur are embroiled in a transfer battle for PSV Eindhoven starlet Steven Bergwijn.
The report has named Liverpool as a contender as well, and it will be interesting to see which club manage to sign him in the end. But as far as the youngster is concerned, he is an exceptional talent, and it comes as no surprise that some of the top Premier League sides have their eyes on him.
Having embarked on his football career at the tender age of 4, it is safe to say that Bergwijn is quite a seasoned player. Initially, he played for his hometown side ASC Waterwijk before being scouted by Dutch giants Ajax.
It was in their prestigious academy that Bergwijn blossomed into one of the most promising wingers in Europe. Currently, he plays a key role for PSV Eindhoven, but with a slew of top clubs chasing his signature, it remains to be seen if he stays put at Philips Stadion.
As far as his playing style is concerned, Bergwijn boasts incredible dribbling and ball retention skills. He can play in a wide variety of attacking positions, but he thrives on the right-wing. Adept at cutting in and creating some space for himself, Bergwijn is also quite impressive when it comes to pulling the opposing full-backs out of position.
In addition to that, the player also supports the team in counter-attacking situations.
Blessed with quick feet and blinding pace, Bergwijn could prove to be a lethal attacking option for either side. Since he is just 20 years old, his next destination could either make or break his career. With that in mind, it would be better for him to choose Tottenham over Arsenal.
Arsenal are currently undergoing a massive transitional phase. After Arsene Wenger’s lengthy tenure came to an end, the Gunners appointed Unai Emery as their new manager. And now, the former PSG boss faces a colossal task to restore the club’s glory days, meaning he might not be able to prioritise the development of a player such as Bergwijn.
But as far as Tottenham are concerned, we are all aware of Mauricio Pochettino’s flair for nurturing young players. Hence, given a choice between the two, Bergwijn must opt to join Spurs.
