Why This Chelsea Target Is A Good Deal For £41.7m And Conte Should Go For Him

Chelsea had a dismal season as they finished 10th in the Premier League, their worst ever finish in the 21st century. Last season, Chelsea were just a mere shadow of the team that won the Premier League in 2015. Chelsea did not have the attacking threat for the majority of the games and their defense leaked goals. Chelsea conceded 53 goals but managed to score only 59. A goal difference of +6 is never enough to compete even for the Europa League places. Eden Hazard and Diego Costa were very ineffective when compared with the performances they gave during the 2014/15 campaign.

After a string of poor performances in the first half of the campaign, Jose Mourinho was sacked and Guus Hiddink took over. Guus Hiddink helped Chelsea finish in the top half of the league table. But for a club like Chelsea, a top-4 finish is a minimum requirement. Antonio Conte has been brought in to bring Chelsea back on track and in the transfer window so far, he has done quite well. Amid rumours of Diego Costa considering a move to his former club Atletico Madrid, Chelsea needs to find a striker who can score at least 20 goals per season. Chelsea have been linked with PSG’s Uruguayan forward Edinson Cavani. Reports suggest that the 29-year-old too, wants to leave the club after Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s move to Manchester United. Chelsea have made a bid worth 41.7 million pounds for Cavani and getting him for that amount would be a great deal for the Blues.

Edinson Cavani has scored 53 goals in 97 league appearances for PSG after he joined in 2013. Last season, in 32 league appearances, Cavani scored 19 goals and registered 5 assists. Cavani has all the ingredients of a world-class forward. The Uruguayan’s finishing is regarded as the best in the French league. Cavani can play as a Forward Left as well as a Centre Forward. While playing on the left wing, Cavani managed to score 14 goals in 16 appearances. He likes to cut inside and take long shots. He holds onto the ball well and with his pace and vision, he provides a serious counter-attacking threat. Cavani’s height and strength gives him an edge over many defenders during set-pieces. Chelsea have the likes of Cesc Fabregas and Willian on set-piece duty and they have an expertise in delivering inch-perfect crosses. So having a target like Cavani in the box will make Chelsea’s set-pieces more fruitful.

Diego Costa was Chelsea’s top scorer in the Premier League last season. If a player with 12 goals is a club’s top scorer, then surely a reinforcement in that area is necessary. Other than Costa, Chelsea do not have a proper striker and to compete in the Premier League, a club needs goals. Signing a striker like Cavani will solve this issue to a great extent. Cavani has the ability and the potential to score at least 20 goals in one season. Costa’s move to Atletico Madrid seems imminent and in that case, Chelsea urgently needs a striker. Getting Cavani for 41.7 million pounds can be termed as a “good deal” for Chelsea as it can bolster Chelsea’s attack to a great extent.
