Why this £80,000-a-week Manchester United star could be better off moving to the Serie A

According to reports, AC Milan are interested in signing Marouane Fellaini, with the Serie A club’s sporting director Massimiliano Mirabelli claiming that the midfielder won’t renew his £80,000-a-week Manchester United contract.

United have tabled an offer for Fellaini which would keep him at the club for another season. However, AC Milan have stepped up their interest in the United player and have reportedly offered Fellaini a three-year deal.

Jose Mourinho wants to keep Fellaini at Old Trafford but the player is taking too long to pledge his loyalty to the club. As far as the situation is concerned, it is becoming clearer that the Belgian is not interested in extending his stay at United and wants a move away.

Fellaini’s United contract is up in the summer and he will be available for free. AC Milan, fresh from guaranteeing a spot in the Europa League, will get a player with a wealth of experience that would instantly boost their midfield.

Fellaini’s style of play is all about physicality and combativeness in the middle of the park. Fellaini did divide opinions amongst United fans but since signing in 2013 from Everton, the midfielder has improved his game.

In fact, he has been considered as a player to execute the Plan B under Mourinho and change the course of the game. Well, it is not wrong to pump the ball high up the field and see Fellaini win the ball but United down the years have been known for an attractive and expansive brand of football under Sir Alex Ferguson.

Speaking about Fellaini’s role at Milan, the 30-year-old would be a good fit under Gennaro Gattuso in terms of physicality and experience. While there’s plenty that Fellaini brings to the table, he is a one-paced midfielder who thrives on set-pieces.

He is neither the quickest of midfielders nor the most agile but Fellaini has proved to be effective at United and that can be one of the reasons why Gattuso wants the Belgian to join his troops this summer.

Marouane Fellaini

After signing almost a dozen players last summer, Milan were expected to make giant strides in the Serie A and the Europa League. However, Vincenzo Montella’s inability to use the new additions to great effect saw him get sacked and replaced by Gattuso.

Gattuso, a former club legend, has taken things back to basics at the San Siro this season, with his tactics and man-management skills guiding Milan to Europe’s second-best competition next term.

Milan did sign a lot of young and talented players last summer but the experience factor was missing in the squad. Fellaini would add a lot of experience and on the top of that, bring a lot of aggression and bite to the midfield, which the Italian club have lacked at times this season.

As for Milan, Fellaini could be a useful acquisition as Gattuso’s men would go all out to compete in Serie A as well as the Europa League next campaign.
