Why this 28-year-old Premier League attacker could become a great player for West Brom

Share

According to reports, West Brom are considering a move for 28-year-old Burnley striker Nahki Wells as they target a return to the Premier League at the first time of asking.

Following his move from Huddersfield Town last summer, Wells didn’t start a single Premier League match for Burnley as all of his nine league appearances came off the bench.

In fact, he spent the majority of the 2017/18 campaign recuperating from an ankle injury. He clocked less than 50 minutes on the pitch in the Premier League without scoring a single goal last term.

West Brom were awfully poor last season and ended up finishing rock-bottom in the Premier League table, despite their mini-revival under Darren Moore.

While the Baggies went down to the Championship, Moore’s good work didn’t go unnoticed as he was handed the reins at the Hawthorns on a permanent basis last month. And the 44-year-old will be desperate to make a mark and get back the club to the Premier League next season.

The Baggies simply cannot think of gaining promotion with their current set of players. Moore must prioritise fixing the defence after a forgettable campaign in the top-flight saw West Brom leak goals for fun. But apart from addressing the defence, Moore should also sign a striker to bolster his attacking options.

West Brom managed just 31 goals in the Premier League last season which tells why Moore must try signing a prolific goalscorer. With that in mind, Burnley’s Wells would fit the bill perfectly at the Hawthorns.

Despite failing to establish himself at Turf Moor, Wells has been a proven goalscorer in the Championship during his time at Huddersfield. The Bermudian got into double figures for three consecutive seasons in the second tier between 2013 and 2016 for Bradford which prompted Huddersfield to make a move for him.

Much of Wells’ failure to hit the ground running under Sean Dyche at Burnley is down to the ankle injury he suffered last year. By the time he attained full fitness, it was December and the likes of Chris Wood, Ashley Barnes and Sam Vokes had already cemented their places in the Burnley team.

However, now that Wells is fit and raring to go, West Brom can surely do well with his services in the Championship. The 28-year-old possesses all of the attributes which Moore’s men currently lack. He is quick, agile, has plenty of experience of playing in the Championship, and is an accomplished finisher.

Wells is predominantly an out-and-out striker but he is capable of playing anywhere along the front-line. And his versatility should appeal to West Brom.

If Moore manages to land Wells at the Hawthorns this summer, it could turn out to be a signing of utmost importance for West Brom as far as their promotion hopes are concerned.
