Why This £27m Rated Barcelona Star Will Be A Super Addition To Tottenham’s Midfield

Denis Suarez

Why Denis Suarez Would Be A Great Signing For Pochettino’s Tottenham

According to reports from Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo (via Metro), Tottenham Hotspur are set to make a surprise swoop to sign Barcelona midfielder Denis Suarez. The 23-year old is a key target for Serie A side Napoli, but Mauricio Pochettino wants to add the Spaniard to his roster and is ready to sanction a £27million move for him, the report claims.

Tottenham are the only Premier League club yet to take a dip into the transfer market this season. The club have sold an important first-team member in the form of Kyle Walker to rivals Manchester City, for a whopping £50million fee, but haven’t brought in any few faces, despite having been heavily linked with a number of players like Ross BarkleyJuan Foyth and Davinson Sanchez

A lot has been said and written in the media about the lack of transfer activity from the Lilywhites, but Pochettino and chairman Daniel Levy seem to have everything under control as they are planning a late spree to get players into the squad before the deadline day comes.

One would suspect that the midfield areas would be the least of the worries for the North Londoners considering the options that they already have at their disposal. With Victor Wanyama and Mousa Dembele the first-choice central midfield pairing, and Eric Dier and young Harry Winks available to act as cover, the central midfield area seems adequately balanced.

But with Denis Suarez, the last season’s runners-up will be getting a much more creative edge from the middle of the park and that could be the prime reason why Pochettino is eyeing the Spaniard.

The 23-year old was at Manchester City, before being snapped up by Barcelona back in the summer of 2013. However, having failed to establish himself at the Camp Nou, he was sent to Villarreal in 2015, where he truly blossomed. Suarez finished the 2015/16 season with an excellent tally of 5 goals and 13 assists in 48 games in all competitions for the Yellow Submarine, which in turn earned him a callup to the Spain national team and a return to Barcelona last summer.

Things did not go that well for the Spain international upon his return to the Camp Nou as he could not establish himself as a regular starter under former manager Luis Enrique. As a result, he managed only 18 starts for the Catalans, in all competitions, with 18 more coming from the bench. He finished the season with modest returns of 3 goals and 5 assists.

It might have not worked out very well for Suarez at Barcelona, but his abilities and qualities are unquestionable. The 23-year old’s biggest asset is his versatility. Suarez can play in almost all the positions in the attacking half of the pitch. Primarily a central midfielder, the 23-year old is equally comfortable when used as a winger on either flank and even as a number 10, and has, on a few occasions operated as a false-nine as well.

The sheer number of options that he will be giving Tottenham in various positions on the field should be enough to convince the club to go out and sign him. But apart from his versatile nature, Suarez has impeccable technical ability as well and should feel right at home with the fast-paced attacking style of play that Tottenham employ under Pochettino.

Add to that his vision and the knack of playing defence splitting passes from the midfield – something which has earned him comparisons to the likes of Xavi and David Silva, along with his pace and brilliant close control, Tottenham will have a young midfielder with great potential and some degree of experience of playing for top clubs.

The Spaniard will offer them so much in terms of cover in different areas of the pitch and certainly has the ability to challenge the likes of Dembele for a spot in the first-team. In the current market, when someone like Paulinho – a Tottenham flop, who as fate might have it, joined Barcelona for £40million, a fee of £27million for someone as talented and gifted as Suarez will be a steal for Spurs if they manage to pull it off.
