Why this 24-year-old Celtic star could thrive with a move to the Premier League

Why Callum McGregor Would Survive In The Premier League

Callum McGregor has had a very interesting season for Celtic in the Scottish Premiership. When he has been played in his favoured attacking midfield position, he has been excellent.

He has 7 goals from that position and often looks dangerous when going forward. He has undoubted ability when attacking and that is his natural game.

The problem this season is that Brendan Rodgers seems to have pinpointed him as a very versatile player, occasionally even deploying him at left-back! He has looked competent but has never excelled as it is just not his natural position.

It is surprising that Rodgers has experimented with him, as he consistently performs when played in a more attacking role.

Because of his undoubted ability, a couple of Premier League clubs have shown interest in signing McGregor in the summer transfer window.

One of these clubs is Bournemouth, who really seem like the perfect fit for McGregor. Eddie Howe has a plethora of hard-working players who all work for each other both in offence and the defence and McGregor fits into that blueprint perfectly.

He is also only 24 years of age. Eddie Howe loves working with players around this age to buildim them into more complete players – a perfect example of this is Matt Ritchie (now at Newcastle), who is a very similar mould to McGregor. Ritchie really thrived under Howe’s management and the Scotsman may look to his compatriot.

The other club he has been linked to is Watford, who would be a slightly stranger fit for him. However, it is indicative of McGregor’s talent that he is being linked with these Premier League sides.

Because of the nature of his performances this season, it is no surprise that a couple of Premier League clubs have come knocking. He is the sort of player that would really thrive in the English league.

He might cost a few millions but it doesn’t seem like too much of a gamble for a player who has done well in the SPL and could benefit from a big career move. He works hard, gives his all, and has undoubted quality as well – the three things that make you excel in the Prem. He would be the perfect fit.
