West Brom are already starting to assess their options this summer after dropping down to the Championship, and it will be a massive transfer window for them.
They will be looking to offload some of the players, who remain on big wages. At the same time, they will look to recruit quality players, who can help them get back to the Premier League.
Manager Darren Moore seems to have laid out his vision for the club and is already in talks with Craig Dawson about tying the defender’s future to West Brom.
Meanwhile, the club are open to offers for Jay Rodriguez, Salomon Rondon and also Jake Livermore, who are all interesting Premier League clubs and could be allowed to leave for the right price, just like Jonny Evans left for Leicester City earlier this month.
One name that has already emerged as a target for West Brom is 25-year-old Bristol City striker Bobby Reid, who took the Championship by storm last season. He scored 19 goals in the league for the Robins and was named in the Championship Team of the Year.
This is the first season Reid has really pulled up any trees at Bristol City, and he hardly set League Two alight scoring just three goals in 33 games for Plymouth Argyle. But Bristol City manager Lee Johnson’s bold choice to move him from midfield into the main striker’s role in pre-season has really helped the player to prosper.
But why have West Brom only bid £7m for a player, who was the Championship’s second-highest goalscorer last season? It does seem like a really paltry amount.
Here are a couple of reasons why this valuation might be quite accurate; firstly his sudden burst into form may be one reason behind his low valuation. He is still a gamble, he tripled his career goalscoring tally in just one season. Maybe, he is being seen as a “one-season wonder.”
His contract issues may be another reason why West Brom have bid so less – he is in the final year of his contract with Bristol City, meaning that the Robins have less power to turn down bids for him in case of a standoff with the player as it may lead to losing him for free at the end of the season.
With West Brom sniffing around, will Reid move to the Hawthorns or remain at Bristol City? It still remains to be seen.
