According to a report by The Sun, Leicester City are interested in signing FC Basel winger Mohamed Elyounoussi this summer. The report further states that Riyad Mahrez could be on his way out of the club, having attracted attention from Premier League champions Manchester City.
If that happens, there would be a massive void for the Foxes to fill and to that end, a move for the 23-year-old could prove to be beneficial. The road ahead will not be easy for Claude Puel and he must quickly have a contingency plan to neutralise the effect of Mahrez’s absence.
Despite going through a series of ups and downs last season, Leicester managed to secure a spot in the top-10. But if they are to harbour ambitions of breaking into the top-6 – a situation that will undoubtedly appease the club’s seemingly ruthless owners – the Foxes could make use of a player like Elyounoussi.
The young winger burst onto the scenes last season as he received widespread fame for his exploits against Manchester City in the Champions League.
He scored a stunning equaliser for Basel and was one of their best performers in the recently concluded campaign, chipping in with 13 goals. In Mahrez’s absence, Leicester will need a reliable yet proven attacker and Elyounoussi fits the mould perfectly.
After all, he has proven his mettle in Europe’s elite competition and it is not easy for a 23-year-old to make his presence felt across the continent. Furthermore, his goalscoring skills and creativity could elevate Leicester’s performances in the final third.
The only thing his game lacks is pace. Elyounoussi often finds himself outrun by his opponents and that is something he needs to work on – particularly if he is to join the English top-flight. The Premier League is known for its physicality and for the player to fit in seamlessly, he must work towards improving his speed.
However, due to his sublime dribbling abilities, the player can trouble and split apart even the toughest of defences. His finishing skills are refined and Elyounoussi thrives in one-on-one situations.
To be honest, Leicester must pursue a deal for him regardless of what Mahrez does. It is always a good idea to have added attacking depth and it goes without saying that challenging for a top-six spot will be anything but easy.
Thus, to improve their chances and to secure a long-term replacement for Mahrez, Leicester must do everything they can to sign Elyounoussi this summer.
