2 goals, 27 games – Chelsea would be foolish to not sell this towering first-team star after lacklustre displays

Why the time is right for Chelsea to cash in on Olivier Giroud

As per Daily Mail, Oliver Giroud is likely to leave Chelsea in the winter transfer window in search of more first-team football. However, the Blues cannot sign a replacement due to their two-window ban.

Giroud is in his last year of contract with the Blues after signing an extension after the arrival of new coach and club legend, Frank Lampard. He has already fallen behind Tammy Abraham in the pecking order and has been competing with Michy Batshuayi for action.

The Frenchman has made just three Premier League appearances this season which also includes a start.

Lampard has backed the academy payers to step up in the hour of need and the youngsters have grabbed the opportunities with both hands. Abraham has scored eight league goals this season, making him the joint top-scorer in the Premier League along with Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero.

Attacking midfielder Mason Mount has scored four goals and provided one assist while Callum Hudson-Odoi returned from injury and provided two assists in his two appearances so far.

Giroud, on the other hand, failed to grab the opportunities at the beginning of the season and provided just one assist in the 100 minutes he played in those three appearances.

Meanwhile, Batshuayi, who has made five substitute appearances, has already scored one goal and provided an assist in the 45 minutes he played.

It will be an ideal situation for Lampard to sell Giroud, who has struggled during his time at Stamford Bridge. That would be a wise move instead of letting him go as a free agent in the summer window.

Abraham and Batshuayi are both young players and are hungry for playing time. Furthermore, selling Giroud would be a sign of faith in the younger players which will boost their confidence.

Giroud scored just two goals and provided four assists in his 27 league appearances last season. Even though he is in France’s starting line-up in almost every match, he is already 33 and will be running out of gas to play 90 minutes soon.

Giroud’s possible departure in the winter will be a win-win situation for both the club and the player. He will hardly get any playing time at Chelsea as long as Abraham and Batshuayi keep themselves away from injuries.

And even if they suffer an injury, Lampard would be better served turning towards an academy player.
